About the Job:
The MicroStrategy Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for developing, enhancing, administering, and supporting Pacsun’s enterprise reporting and analytics solutions using Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) on top of the Snowflake retail data warehouse. Reporting to the Manager, Business Analytics & Reporting, the Engineer maintains and evolves the Strategy metadata and reporting environment, builds new business reports and analytics, supports upgrades and production operations, and troubleshoots issues.
The Engineer understands both the technology and the retail business context behind the data, and brings AI into daily BI work, using natural language query, AI-generated insights, and GenAI tools to improve both the analytics delivered and the way it is built.
A day in the life, what you’ll be doing:
- Report and dashboard development. Design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise reports, dashboards, dossiers, metrics, and analytical applications in Strategy, taking each solution from business requirements through testing and production support.
- Metadata and semantic layer. Maintain and enhance Strategy metadata, including attributes, facts, metrics, hierarchies, transformations, filters, prompts, schema objects, security, and reusable components, to keep reporting consistent, accurate, and performant.
- Retail measures and business logic. Apply retail business logic, including sales, inventory, cost, margin, gross margin, and sell-through, and ensure reports calculate and present these measures correctly.
- SQL and data warehouse. Work hands-on with SQL, Snowflake, relational databases, and dimensional models to validate reporting logic, reconcile reports to source data, resolve discrepancies, and tune report SQL, in collaboration with data engineers.
- Production support. Provide day-to-day production support, including root-cause analysis, defect resolution, performance tuning, monitoring, and user support.
- Upgrades and environments. Support Strategy upgrades, patches, migrations, environment management, regression testing, and release deployment, using tools such as Workstation, Object Manager, Integrity Manager, and Command Manager.
- AI-enabled analytics. Integrate AI features such as natural language query, AI-generated insights and narratives, and anomaly detection into dashboards, and use GenAI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT, Strategy AI features, Snowflake Cortex) to accelerate development, documentation, and testing. Evaluate new AI tools and share what works with the team.
- Business partnership. Partner with business stakeholders across merchandising, planning, inventory, stores, eCommerce, finance, supply chain, and marketing to clarify requirements and deliver usable, accurate solutions. Collaborate closely with the Manager, data engineers, the Data Architect, other IT teams, and external partners.
- Governance and security. Follow data governance, row-level security, access control, and responsible AI practices, including accuracy checks on AI-generated output.
- Documentation and continuous improvement. Document report logic, metadata changes, technical designs, and operational procedures, and continuously improve reporting performance, usability, maintainability, and development standards. Stay current on Strategy platform updates and emerging AI analytics trends.
Collaboration & Team Expectations:
- Exemplify integrity, ownership, and a collaborative spirit when working across IT, data engineering, and business teams.
- Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex data and AI concepts into actionable business insights.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous learning by sharing AI and data knowledge within the BI and analytics team.
- Support cross-functional initiatives, including ERP and financial systems transformation work, as they relate to reporting.
What it takes to join:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Analytics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Mandatory: 3+ years of hands-on Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) development and engineering experience in an enterprise environment, with strong working knowledge of metadata and architecture, including metrics, attributes, facts, schema objects, reports and dashboards, security, and troubleshooting.
- Mandatory: strong SQL skills and a thorough understanding of relational databases, data warehousing, dimensional modeling, and analytical data structures.
- Mandatory: retail industry experience, with practical understanding of sales, inventory, cost, margin, and related retail analytics and reporting concepts.
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake as a cloud data warehouse, including querying and integration with Strategy.
- Demonstrated ability to develop new enterprise reports and analytics from business requirements through testing and production support.
- Demonstrated experience learning, adopting, and applying AI or generative AI tools in a BI or analytics context (e.g., natural language query, AI-generated narratives, or AI-assisted development).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with business users, technical peers, and external partners in a fast-paced production environment.
- Fashion, apparel, or specialty retail experience.
- Experience with Strategy administration, upgrades, performance tuning, and environment migrations.
- Strategy (MicroStrategy) certification (Developer or Architect level) and Snowflake certification (e.g., SnowPro).
- Exposure to Tableau, Power BI, or other analytics platforms.
Developing the Community/ Leadership Qualities:
- Operate with the highest level of conduct, integrity, and confidentiality; setting the example for leaders and associates.
- Develop and nurture strong cross functional partnerships; driving business results and inspiring a culture of transparency, collaboration, and accountability.
