The ideal candidate will have 5–10+ years of construction inspection experience, with strong technical knowledge of vertical construction, elevators, escalators, stairways, and building mechanical and electrical systems. The successful candidate will inspect construction activities, verify compliance with approved drawings and specifications, and support quality assurance throughout construction, installation, testing, and project closeout. Experience on major transportation infrastructure projects, particularly with PANYNJ, MTA, aviation facilities, rail transit stations, or other complex public-sector construction programs, is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field inspections of vertical construction, including structural components, stairways, elevators, escalators, platforms, concourses, and station facilities.
- Inspect building mechanical, electrical and associated systems for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Monitor installation, testing, commissioning, and acceptance activities for elevators, escalators, and other vertical transportation systems.
- Review construction drawings, shop drawings, specifications, inspection reports, and relevant technical submittals.
- Identify deficiencies, document nonconforming work, and monitor corrective actions through resolution.
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, construction managers, safety personnel, and other project stakeholders.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, photographic documentation, punch lists, and quality assurance records.
- Verify compliance with applicable building codes, PANYNJ standards, project specifications, and established safety requirements.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of relevant building construction inspection experience
- Demonstrated inspection experience involving vertical construction and building systems, including structural, mechanical, and electrical components.
- Working knowledge of elevators, escalators, stairs, and related vertical transportation systems.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, building codes, and inspection requirements.
- Experience coordinating with contractors and documenting construction quality and deficiencies.
Education
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline preferred.
- Education substitution: A high school diploma or GED combined with at least 10 years of directly relevant, progressively responsible building construction inspection experience may substitute for a college degree, provided the candidate demonstrates the required technical competencies.
- Relevant apprenticeship, trade school, or journeyman-level training in building construction, electrical, mechanical, or elevator/escalator systems may also be considered.
Certifications and Training
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification required, or ability to obtain before start.
- Valid driver's license, where required for project duties.
- Ability to obtain and maintain applicable PANYNJ site-access credentials and airport security clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience on PANYNJ, MTA, NJ TRANSIT, airport, rail transit, or other major public infrastructure projects.
- NICET II (or higher) certification in a relevant construction inspection discipline.
- ICC Commercial Building Inspector certification or other applicable ICC inspection credentials.
- QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) certification, particularly for candidates performing specialized elevator and escalator inspections.
- Familiarity with ASME A17.1/CSA B44, ASME A17.2, applicable ICC building codes, NFPA standards, and accessibility requirements.
- Experience with construction quality assurance, punch-list management, systems testing, and commissioning.
- Familiarity with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, or comparable construction documentation platforms.
Compensation
The good-faith compensation range for this position is $55-$65 per hour. The final rate will be based on the selected candidate’s experience, qualifications, certifications, technical expertise, and applicable client requirements.
