Original job description

SENIOR SOLUTIONS ENGINEER

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time - but it’s also the greatest opportunity for innovation, and a challenge we’re proud to take on. At Overstory, we’re harnessing cutting-edge technology to enable a resilient electrical grid that keeps communities thriving as our world changes.

The grid is the backbone of life as we know it. It powers hospitals, keeps food fresh, and ensures communities stay connected. But extreme weather, aging infrastructure, and growing wildfire risks are putting this critical system under pressure. All of this combined makes the electric utility industry the greatest opportunity for tackling climate change.

One of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires and power outages? Trees and brush coming into contact with power lines.

That’s where we help. At Overstory, we use AI and advanced satellite imagery to pinpoint and prioritize vegetation risks before they materialize. By giving utilities critical analysis on those risks, we’re helping prevent outages, reduce wildfire risks, and accelerate the transition to a safer, more resilient grid.

Our team spans the Americas and Europe, and we work with utility partners across the Americas and beyond. We’re outdoor enthusiasts, musicians, artists, athletes, parents, and adventurers. What unites us is a passion for solving complex problems, a commitment to climate action, and the belief that technology should be a force for good.

Join us to help us build a more resilient world together.

ROLE & TEAM

As a Senior Solutions Engineer at Overstory, you'll turn our vegetation intelligence into operational impact for utility customers. Our data products - derived from satellite imagery and machine learning - give utilities a clearer picture of where vegetation poses risk to their power lines. Vegetation-caused outages are a leading cause of power disruption and a growing driver of wildfire risk, and climate change is making the problem harder. You'll deliver analyses with technical and geospatial depth, build tools and workflows that make our work scale, and help customers actually act on what we provide. You’ll own the hardest customer problems from open questions to real-world impact, and turn what we learn in the field into what we productize next.

This role is a great fit for someone who is unreasonably curious about customers’ needs, is motivated to delight customers and push the frontier of our impact, and is excited to grow with a high-growth, mission-driven company. Highlights:

Ownership: Innovate on, deliver, and grow a critical capability for a fast-growing business - from customer outcomes through scalable productization.
Impact: Make a tangible, scalable contribution to climate resilience in the power sector.
Influence: Shape how the team has impact and what product and engineering build next.
Trajectory: Grow your career at a high-growth company, staying in Solutions Engineering or with pathways into Product, Customer Success, Sales, or Strategy.

Time Zone Requirement: North America (EST preferred)

WHAT YOU'LL DO

On a typical day, you might be: scoping an open-ended customer question into an analysis plan, helping a teammate consider the best approach, leading a working session with utility operations leadership. turning a pattern seen across several customers into a product proposal, or building an AI-assisted workflow the team adopts.

ENSURE OUR CUSTOMERS GET THE MOST POSSIBLE VALUE OUT OF OVERSTORY THROUGH TECHNICAL AND ANALYTICAL WORK

Own outcomes for complex engagements: identify the insights and functionality that would cause customers to put Overstory to work in the field, deliver them, and course-correct until the customer acts.
Be a trusted technical advisor to utility counterparts up to leadership.

SHAPE HOW THE TEAM CREATES IMPACT

Set ways-of-working others adopt, such as how we approach investigations, document analyses for reuse, and run customer working sessions.
Mentor and coach other team members.
Transform the impact you and the team can have with AI.

BUILD THE TECHNICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR WHAT WE PRODUCTIZE NEXT

Lead the technical work when customer work becomes a product opportunity: prototype, prove value, and hand off to engineering.
Strengthen engineering quality so analytical work is easier to validate, hand off, and scale.
Partner with product and engineering to shape the productization roadmap.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Passionate about tackling climate challenges with data-driven solutions.
6+ years of professional experience working with large, complex geospatial datasets in a customer- or stakeholder-facing capacity.
Track record of driving customer outcomes.
Experience leading through influence: mentoring, reviewing others’ work, and establishing standards.
Experience converting bespoke analysis into reusable tools, pipelines, or product features.
Proficiency with an AI-powered Python-driven analytical and engineering stack - coding agents, Python, Jupyter, git/GitHub.
Demonstrated use of AI tools to change how you or your team works.
Demonstrated attention to detail and care with data.
Proven ability to solve ambiguous problems and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
Excellent communication, including translating technical findings for non-technical audiences and building rapport with customer counterparts.

NICE TO HAVE

Background in utility operations or infrastructure
Experience with remote sensing, satellite imagery, or other earth observation data
SQL or experience with data engineering pipelines
Prior work in a high-growth startup or mission-driven company

WHAT WE OFFER

Competitive, location-specific compensation and benefits.
Flexible, autonomous and collaborative working environment rooted in trust - we build our work days around our lives, not the other way around
Home office stipend, coworking and ongoing education budgets
A company culture that genuinely embodies each of our core values
To be part of truly mission-driven work that reduces wildfires, protects earth’s natural resources and helps solve our climate crisis

ABOUT OUR TEAM

We are a fast-growing team of about 100 people from all over the world. Fifteen nationalities are represented and at last count we speak fourteen languages: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Luxembourgish, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Finnish, Estonian, and Afrikaans.

We work remotely from eleven countries and are looking for candidates that are living and working in one of them: United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Canada. We gather once a year in-person for our unforgettable team gathering event. We also offer the option to occasionally meet up for in-person collaboration.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

The climate crisis is a human crisis that requires diverse perspectives to solve.

We place enormous value on diversity and believe that the best ideas emerge when people with different backgrounds and experience work together.

We remain committed to scaling a team that reflects the communities we serve, and strive to uphold equitable and inclusive practices across every aspect of our business.

We are responsible for creating and maintaining a culture where everyone - regardless of background - has a voice in building a sustainable future.

OUR VALUES

Tackling the climate crisis is our greatest mission.

We act with urgency.

Our curiosity fuels our growth.

We recognize that change is constant, and we find joy and power in exploration.

We’re rooted in diversity.

Just as ecosystems need biodiversity to thrive, our resiliency comes from our differences.

We care for each other.

We love the power of machines but we nurture each other as humans.

Trust is fundamental.

We assume the best in everyone, and we share ideas openly so that we have a positive impact.
