Original job description

About Noto noto.nyc Noto provides modern AI native vertical software for after school businesses like tutoring centers, music schools, and art schools. Their powerful feature set greatly reduces the administrative complexity for traditional manual tasks such as registration, rescheduling, and payments, allowing these owners to focus on what they do best: teaching.

Noto is fresh off a $4M seed round, backed by top tier VC’s like Base10 and South Park Commons. Noto is founded by two technical founders AJ Ding and Steve Wang and is based out of NYC (AJ) and SF (Steve). About the team AJ Ding is the CEO of Noto. He's a second-time founder and previously built an AI recruiting company. He was a machine learning engineer and data scientist at Quora, Lyft, & Meta. He studied Statistics at Yale and most importantly, he comes from a family of small business owners.

Steve is the CTO of Noto. He was previously the Head of Engineering at Nitra, an a16z backed vertical SaaS startup that built back office automation for doctors. He's worked in data science and engineering at Lyft. He studied math at Harvard, and his family is from Canada. About the role We want to expand our in-person founding engineering team in SF. We are looking for one Founding Engineer and one Senior Founding Engineer. Both should be full-stack (although it’s okay if the Senior candidate is stronger on the backend). We’re looking for engineers who truly understand what it’s like to work at a startup.

3 - 6 years of experience in a software engineering role. The Founding Engineer should have 3+ and we expect the Senior Founding Engineer to have 5+
Experience at early-stage, growth startup (seed, series A, series B)
Started at big tech then moved to a startup
Able to take undefined product thinking & independently scope + execute large features optimizing for speed with attention to scale.
Based in the Bay Area, excited to work grow our in-person eng team in SF.
CS degree from a top/ competitive undergraduate program
Familiarity with the tech stack:
React, Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Drizzle, LLMs, tRPC in a monorepo, Vercel deployments

We'd love to see

Strong signs of empathy for everyday people (e.g., volunteering, teaching, community involvement)
Early experience at the workflow management tool companies (e.g,, early linear, early asana)
Impact-oriented: You care about small business owners and want to use software & AI to help them thrive
Product-minded: You won't just be handed specs. You should take initiative, ask questions, and actively contribute to the roadmap

Values that align with Noto

Always Be Shipping – Progress over perfection, iterate quickly 🚢
Pride in our Craft – Quality matters - we take pride in our work 🎨
Serve the Customer – Our users run small businesses; we exist to make their lives easier💡

Highlights/ Why Noto:

High levels of ownership and exciting pace
Building software for good in the EduTech industry
Serve everyday people in local communities and make a large impact in an underserved market (examples):
"Y'all are incredible and have made such a difference in my life in ways both professional and personal. I'm grateful and indebted." - Noto Customer 🥰
Each customer averages over 6 hours of usage / day

Work Culture

Work hard. The founders work 70-80 hour weeks, and while we don’t expect everyone to match this, startup life isn’t a 9-to-5 job. Some late nights and occasional weekends will be expected. But this isn’t about burnout - it’s about growth and impact. If you want to build something meaningful and grow fast, let’s talk. 🪴
Have fun too! We are not just about grinding. We recently took a work offsite to Mexico City, where we did a hackathon, explored the city, and bonded over tacos. 🌮. In the past, we've hosted a Karaoke Night with one of our first customers, a music school in Manhattan - turns out debugging and belting out pop songs go hand in hand. 🎤
Growth Mindset: We also attend industry conferences to connect with our users, learn, network, and push the boundaries of our craft.
Low Ego: We believe in collaboration over hierarchy 🤝. We have a flat decision-making structure - great ideas can come from anywhere.
High Camaraderie: We are in the trenches together, so we take care of each other and celebrate our collective success.

Employee benefits

Meals & Budget – Office lunch and a stipend for work-related expenses 🍕
Company Retreats – Join us for team retreats to bond, recharge, and plan the future together✈️
