ABOUT onX
We’re a team of builders, adventurers, and risk takers using technology to help people confidently explore the outdoors. Driven by our mission to awaken the adventurer inside everyone, we build products that optimize every outdoor experience and inspire confidence to get out and go further.
We’re a high-growth tech company. The pace is fast, the work takes grit, and ambiguity is part of the job. As the world changes around us, we adapt - continuously evolving how we build, prioritize, and deliver.
Our business moves quickly, and there’s real opportunity to shape what we build next. Each of our verticals - Hunt, Offroad, Backcountry, and Fish - is at a different stage of maturity, which means the challenges you encounter and the impact you have will vary depending on where you sit and what the business needs most.
We operate with an experimentation mindset, continually iterating and improving how we solve problems. We expect our people to use the latest tooling, including AI, thoughtfully and responsibly, pairing human judgment with technology to increase quality, speed, and impact.
Our impact comes to life through the products we build, in the stories of our customers, and in our growing commitment to land stewardship and recreational access.
ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
onX is seeking a Senior iOS Engineer who will contribute to meaningful, real-world outcomes that have a lasting impact for customers and the business. In this role, as part of the Identity & Access Management (IAM) team, you’ll focus on owning the iOS client libraries that power authentication, sessions and feature access across every onX app, and the pipeline for sign-ups and entitlements. You’ll be supporting secure, reliable access to onX Hunt, Offroad, Fish and Backcountry for millions of hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, including when they’re far from a cell signal. You’ll take ownership of your work, collaborate closely with partners across the organization, and help move initiatives forward in an environment where priorities evolve, learning is celebrated, and you’re encouraged to keep stretching your skills. This role will report to a Software Engineering Manager III.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions
- Own the platform. You’ll own onX’s iOS identity, subscription, and feature-access libraries: shared Swift packages consumed by every onX iOS app. You’ll set their technical direction, decide which patterns to keep and which to replace, and see changes through to production. You’ll co-own the API contracts with backend and push for changes when needed.
- Make auth dependable in the field. You’ll harden token refresh and session lifecycle, lead adoption of Swift strict concurrency, and handle network loss gracefully so users stay signed in when they need the app most.
- See what’s happening. You’ll build client-side observability for identity flows so the team can see auth health by device, OS version and app, then use that data to find and fix problems before customers report them.
- Champion both directions. You’ll represent iOS in IAM design work (account management, session management, passkeys, one-time passwords, entitlements and bundling) and represent IAM in the iOS codebase, partnering with backend engineers, iOS platform leads and product teams across our apps. You’ll push for new capabilities when the current ones aren’t enough.
- Work with your Android counterpart. You’ll be partnered on the team with an Android counterpart to keep identity and entitlement behavior consistent: shared specs, shared test cases, and joint design docs.
- Raise the bar. You’ll grow the team’s client expertise through code review, documentation and mentoring, including backend engineers who contribute to client code. You’ll identify the next problems worth solving, write the design doc, align stakeholders, and drive it through rollout across apps.
- Adopt new technologies. You’ll look for opportunities to embed AI as a repeatable co-pilot in daily workflows by integrating experimentation into real work, and continuously refining its use with sound judgment and validation.
- Support for uptime and availability. You’ll join the team-based oncall rotation for the Identity team. While this does not require strong backend expertise, you may occasionally need to follow a runbook or escalate depending on the situation.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Six or more years of professional software development experience, with building and shipping production iOS apps in Swift as a primary focus for at least three of those years, is required.
- Deep knowledge of Swift and Swift Concurrency (async/await, actors, Sendable), and experience diagnosing race conditions and threading issues in production apps.
- Experience building and maintaining a shared library or SDK used by multiple apps or teams (Swift Package Manager, versioning, API design for other engineers).
- Working knowledge of mobile authentication: OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect, token storage in the Keychain, ASWebAuthenticationSession, and session handling across app launches and backgrounding.
- Security-first mindset: you think about secure defaults, token handling, and failure modes as part of your design process.
- Comfort being the go-to expert for client identity and entitlements: you weigh tradeoffs, explain them to engineers outside iOS, and push back or propose a new approach when the current one isn’t working.
- Experience driving cross-team technical initiatives, from design doc to rollout.
- A strong curiosity for exploring new technologies, including AI
- A shared passion for and ability to demonstrate onX’s Company Values.
- Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
- Ability to travel bi-annually for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.
ADDED BONUSES
Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:
- Experience with identity platforms such as Ory (Kratos, Hydra), Auth0 or Okta, or with passkeys / WebAuthn.
- Experience instrumenting iOS apps with Sentry or similar tools, including custom metrics and tracing.
- Experience with StoreKit, in-app subscriptions or entitlement checks.
- Experience building offline-first apps, or apps used where connectivity is unreliable.
- Experience working with a distributed team.
- A love of the outdoors and the apps that get people there.
THE ONX EXPERIENCE
onX is a distributed company with more than 400 employees across the country. We come together regularly to work in person and stay connected through regional basecamps and a culture that balances individual ownership with deep collaboration.
While we move quickly, we’re not a scrappy start-up. We operate with clear goals, structure, and frameworks that guide how we prioritize and execute. Priorities matter. While they may shift, data shapes how we evolve as our business, products, and the world around us change.
Clear priorities and structure don’t limit ownership - they make it possible. You’ll have the autonomy to define your work and make meaningful decisions within clear strategic boundaries. You’ll partner closely with others to solve complex problems and build solutions that scale across teams and platforms. Along the way, you’ll be supported with feedback, tools, and opportunities to grow your craft as you take on new challenges.
