Job Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary Onto Innovation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design, analyze, integrate, and support mechanical systems for advanced semiconductor inspection and metrology products. This individual contributor will develop robust mechanical solutions that support precision motion, optical stability, thermal performance, manufacturability, serviceability, and long-term field reliability. The role is primarily on-site in Wilmington, Massachusetts, with travel up to 25%.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate mechanical assemblies, structures, mechanisms, enclosures, precision fixtures, thermal management solutions, and system integration hardware for advanced semiconductor inspection and metrology equipment.
  • Perform engineering analyses including tolerance stack-ups, structural and thermal evaluations, design reviews, prototype testing, and verification activities.
  • Generate and release engineering documentation, drawings, specifications, and change orders in accordance with company processes.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to support component development, production readiness, and quality improvements.
  • Provide manufacturing, installation, and field support by troubleshooting technical issues and implementing corrective actions.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Optics, Automation, Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Field Service, Technical Product Support, Product Management, Marketing, and strategic customers.
  • Drive continuous mechanical design improvements focused on reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost optimization, and overall customer satisfaction.
  • Contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development and prototyping through production release and customer deployment.
  • Ensure designs meet performance, quality, safety, schedule, and cost objectives while supporting next-generation semiconductor technology development.
  • Apply strong analytical problem-solving, engineering judgment, and cross-functional collaboration to drive high-quality mechanical designs, resolve field issues, and improve reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of mechanical engineering experience developing semiconductor equipment, capital equipment, precision instrumentation, automation systems, robotics, optical systems, motion platforms, or other complex electromechanical products.
  • Strong expertise in mechanical design, tolerance analysis, structural and thermal design considerations, CAD modeling, engineering documentation, prototype development, testing, and validation.
  • Experience supporting supplier engagement, design transfer, manufacturing release, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive technical projects while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary engineering, operations, and customer-facing teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience with semiconductor inspection, metrology, lithography, advanced packaging, process control equipment, or other precision semiconductor manufacturing systems.
  • Knowledge of optical alignment systems, vibration-sensitive platforms, precision motion stages, thermal management solutions, and high-accuracy mechanical assemblies.
  • Proficiency with CAD and PDM/PLM systems, engineering change management processes, and configuration control.
  • Experience applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), supplier qualification, reliability engineering, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with cleanroom environments, new product introduction (NPI), and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration, Six Sigma certification, Lean Manufacturing training, Design for Reliability (DfR) experience, or equivalent advanced technical credentials are a plus.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant industry experience may be considered for candidates demonstrating senior-level mechanical design expertise and technical leadership.
