Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers’ critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
Onto Innovation is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to design, integrate, troubleshoot, and support electrical systems for advanced semiconductor inspection and metrology products. This individual contributor will develop reliable electrical architectures, power distribution systems, controls, harnessing, and signal pathways that enable high-performance operation in demanding customer environments. This role is primarily on-site in Wilmington, Massachusetts, with up to 25% travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, integrate, and troubleshoot electrical subsystems, power distribution systems, control panels, cabling, sensors, motion control interfaces, safety circuits, and signal integrity solutions for semiconductor inspection and metrology systems.
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, electrical documentation, bills of materials, and engineering change documentation.
- Support design reviews, prototype builds, system integration, testing, verification, and manufacturing release activities.
- Coordinate with suppliers and internal teams to support component selection, qualification, manufacturing readiness, and product lifecycle management.
- Investigate electrical failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support manufacturing, field service, and customer escalations by troubleshooting electrical system issues and driving resolution.
- Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Optics, Automation, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Operations, Field Service, Technical Product Support, Product Management, Marketing, and strategic customers.
- Drive electrical design improvements through analytical problem-solving, root cause analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to improve reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and customer readiness.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of electrical engineering experience supporting semiconductor equipment, capital equipment, precision instrumentation, automation systems, robotics, motion control systems, imaging systems, or other complex electromechanical products.
- Strong expertise in electrical design, schematics, power distribution, grounding, EMI/EMC design considerations, signal integrity, sensors, controls, harnessing, and test equipment.
- Experience with root cause analysis, manufacturing support, system integration, and field issue resolution.
- Demonstrated ability to independently drive technical projects and achieve cross-functional alignment on complex engineering issues.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Science, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience with semiconductor inspection, metrology, lithography, process control, advanced packaging, cleanroom equipment, machine vision, precision motion systems, and safety-related controls.
- Familiarity with electrical compliance requirements, product safety standards, and regulatory certification activities.
- Experience with ECO processes, PLM systems, supplier quality programs, issue tracking systems, and design-for-serviceability practices.
- Knowledge of reliability engineering, new product introduction (NPI), and sustaining engineering methodologies.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration, IPC certifications, Six Sigma certification, Lean training, electrical safety certifications, or equivalent technical credentials are a plus.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered for candidates demonstrating advanced electrical engineering expertise and technical leadership.
