Original job description
The opportunity onetwentyfi, a fractional CFO firm, is recruiting a hands-on Controller for one of our clients to own the books for their North American business. The client has outgrown its current accounting processes. This person will start part-time, learn how the books are run today, then clean up and rebuild those processes using modern, best-practice workflows for a multi-channel consumer products business. This is a build-and-fix role, not a maintain-the-machine role. About our client Our client is a consumer products company in the craft and hobby category, selling through its own e-commerce site, national retailers and distributors. Product is sourced from overseas manufacturers, and the catalog runs to several thousand active SKUs. The group operates as a multi-entity structure with companies in North America, Europe and Asia, and the North American entity leads sales for the group. About the role
What success looks like:
- The monthly close finishes on schedule, and leadership trusts the numbers.
- Inventory on the books matches what is in the warehouse.
- A 13-week cash forecast is updated every week.
- Balances between the North American, European and Asian entities reconcile every month.
- NetSuite shows margin by channel, SKU and customer without manual spreadsheet work.
You report to the client's fractional CFO from onetwentyfi and work closely with their CEO, sales and operations. What you'll own
- Process cleanup and redesign: map how work is done today, then rebuild close, AP, AR and inventory workflows with modern tools, automation and clean NetSuite reporting, documented so anyone on the team can run them.
- Month-end close for the North American entity: reconciliations, accruals, journal entries and a close calendar the team actually hits.
- Inventory accounting across several thousand SKUs: landed cost (freight, duty, tariffs), costing, reserves for slow-moving stock, and physical count reconciliation with the warehouse.
- Cash forecasting and working capital: a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast, AP payment runs, collections follow-through, and reporting to lenders and financing partners.
- Channel accounting for e-commerce, national retailers and distributors, including retailer deductions and chargebacks, customer terms and AR.
- Multi-entity and international: intercompany activity, FX, and consolidation support with the European and Asian entities.
- Compliance: multi-state sales tax, 1099s, and coordination with outside tax advisors and auditors.
Required experience
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
- Has led an accounting cleanup: rebuilt reconciliations and redesigned close, AP or inventory processes using modern tools and automation.
- Experience at a CPG or consumer products company with physical inventory.
- Hands-on NetSuite experience running the close, reconciliations and financial reporting.
- Experience accounting for a catalog of 1,000+ active SKUs, including landed cost.
- Experience with a multi-entity structure that includes at least one foreign entity (intercompany, FX, consolidation).
- Has built and maintained a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast.
- Experience with revenue across e-commerce plus retail or distributor channels.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- Experience with imported goods: customs duties, tariffs, duty refunds and ocean freight accruals.
Preferred experience
- CPA or CMA.
- Experience managing big-box retailer deductions, chargebacks and compliance programs.
- Experience with multi-state sales tax, including nexus and marketplace facilitator rules.
- Experience accounting for licensing and royalty agreements.
- Experience working alongside a finance team in another country and time zone.
- Familiarity with Shopify and Ramp.
Engagement details This role is engaged as an independent contractor through onetwentyfi with the potential to transition to a full-time position with the client.
- Location: Fully Remote
- Hours: about 15 hours a week to start, opportunity to convert to full time directly with client
