Job Description

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

DESCRIPTION:

Thermo Fisher Scientific is hiring a Business Development Manager to expand market share and generate revenue through biopharma collaborations. You will identify and pursue opportunities, including commercial partnerships, device development collaborations, and strategic alliances that support the biopharma business strategy. Working closely with cross-functional teams and pharmaceutical partners, you will assess market opportunities, structure and negotiate agreements, and manage partnerships after execution. You will help meet business revenue targets by developing new opportunities, closing agreements, and ensuring we meet our performance obligations. Your work will support collaborations that help our clients and partners make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

KEY DUTIES TO INCLUDE:

  • Identify, qualify, and develop business opportunities with pharmaceutical companies for HLA typing and related transplant diagnostic solutions, building a pipeline that supports annual revenue targets.
  • Develop and advance partnerships across pharmaceutical clinical development, including investigational device performance studies conducted alongside sponsored drug trials and companion diagnostic development through regulatory submission and commercialization.
  • Work with pharma partners and internal scientific, clinical, regulatory, quality, legal, finance, and commercial teams to assess collaboration needs, scope work, and shape viable proposals.
  • Structure, negotiate, and execute collaboration agreements, including the scope of work, budgets, milestones, deliverables, timelines, roles, and other commercial terms.
  • Manage partner relationships after execution, coordinate governance and issue resolution, and maintain clear communication on project status, decisions, risks, and changes.
  • Track contractual commitments and financial performance; coordinate with delivery teams to help ensure obligations are met, revenue is recognized as applicable, and risks to revenue or timelines are addressed.
  • Monitor market, customer, and competitive developments to identify new partnership opportunities and inform account and business development strategies.
  • Represent the biopharma business in internal and external meetings and provide accurate opportunity, forecast, and partnership updates in CRM and other business systems.
  • Travel up to 20% to support customer meetings, partner governance, and business development activities.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 6+ years of relevant experience, in business development, strategic partnerships, or related commercial roles.
  • Preferred fields of study include life sciences, chemistry, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics, or broader life sciences industry; experience working in a regulated environment is required.
  • Demonstrated success developing and closing complex commercial agreements or strategic partnerships and managing external stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience with companion diagnostics, in vitro diagnostics, transplant diagnostics, and/or pharma clinical development is preferred.
  • Experience with design control documentation, analytical or clinical validation, investigational device performance studies, FDA 510(k) submissions, or EU IVDR is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical or medical device business models and the expectations of working in a regulated industry.
  • Understanding of medical device development under design controls and of pharmaceutical clinical development is preferred. Familiarity with analytical and clinical validation and companion diagnostic pathways is a plus.
  • Ability to assess customer needs and market opportunities, develop business cases, evaluate deal economics, and contribute to revenue forecasts.
  • Strong negotiation, agreement development, and commercial judgment skills, with the ability to explain tradeoffs and reach workable terms.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with senior external partners and collaborate effectively across a global, matrixed organization.
  • Strong project management and organization skills, including the ability to manage multiple opportunities and partnership commitments at different stages.
  • Clear written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate technical and commercial concepts to varied audiences.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems such as Salesforce and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
