What This Role Delivers
At OPPD, we power the communities we serve by providing safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible energy. As one of the nation's largest public power utilities, we invest in critical infrastructure and innovative solutions that strengthen reliability across our generation fleet and the communities that depend on it.
As an Electrical Design Engineer III, you will contribute directly to capital improvement projects that enhance the safety, reliability, and performance of OPPD's generation facilities. Working as part of the Design Engineering team, you will provide electrical engineering expertise for generation asset upgrades from concept through construction and commissioning. This role combines technical engineering work with project leadership responsibilities, including design development, engineering calculations, cost estimating, schedule management, procurement coordination, and construction support.
You will independently lead electrical design efforts for moderate-scope projects while partnering with operations, maintenance, project management, and other engineering disciplines to deliver successful outcomes. Future initiatives include modernization of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), electrical power systems, and related plant infrastructure that support the long-term reliability of OPPD's generation fleet.
What You'll Do
- Lead electrical design development for moderate-scope capital projects, including engineering evaluations, calculations, specifications, drawings, installation packages, and commissioning support.
- Develop technical solutions for generation plant upgrades involving power distribution systems, control systems, instrumentation, DCS, and PLC-related applications.
- Perform engineering analyses and calculations to ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, operational requirements, and safety expectations.
- Manage assigned project workstreams by developing cost estimates, supporting business cases, tracking budgets, and maintaining project schedules.
- Coordinate procurement activities with Supply Chain and support material evaluation, vendor engagement, and equipment selection.
- Lead construction management activities including contractor coordination, field support, progress reporting, and issue resolution.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, project management, and other engineering disciplines to deliver project objectives.
- Support development and improvement of engineering standards, procedures, and design practices.
- Mentor early-career engineers and provide technical guidance to support team development.
- Ensure project documentation, testing records, and engineering deliverables are completed and archived in accordance with OPPD requirements.
What You Will Bring
- Demonstrated ability to successfully complete essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
What Will Help You Stand Out
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Five (5) or more years of engineering experience in power generation, industrial facilities, utilities, manufacturing, or other complex infrastructure environments.
- Experience developing electrical engineering designs, calculations, technical specifications, and construction packages.
- Experience managing engineering project tasks, schedules, budgets, or capital improvement work.
- Knowledge of electrical power systems, industrial controls, instrumentation, or automation systems.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical information and collaborate across multiple stakeholder groups.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- Experience supporting DCS, PLC, or industrial automation system upgrades.
