Original job description
The future must be created.
01 THE ROLE
Chemistry is the invisible layer under every critical system, and the supply chain behind it has become a weapon. Ohr makes the molecules that matter most, from the atom up: energetics, propellants, rare-earth extractants and the ignition chemicals already in production today.
As a Senior Process Engineer at Ohr you take our technology from scale-up through delivered engineering packages - balances, equipment, drawings, and the project plans that put them on the ground. You'll be Responsible Engineer on several projects at once, and the person R&D comes to when a scale-up question needs an engineering answer rather than an opinion.
THE KIND OF PEOPLE THIS WORK DEMANDS
Our mission demands more than great science. It requires a particular kind of team - visionary builders, hustlers, scientists, operators. Together, we carry both the technical depth to make the chemistry work and the commercial instinct to make the business thrive. People are our engine. Collaboration is our multiplier.
02 WHAT YOU'LL DESIGN AND BUILD
- Develop heat and material balances, size and specify equipment, and produce PFDs and P&IDs for new and modified processes
- Own delivery of engineering packages - on schedule, inside budget, and technically defensible
- Serve as Responsible Engineer on multiple concurrent projects
- Partner with R&D early to find and retire scale-up risk before it reaches a drawing
- Lead technical interactions with equipment vendors, EPC contractors, and consultants, responding to EPC needs promptly and with sound technical positions
- Contribute to HAZOPs and risk identification, and validate calculations, balances, equipment sizing, and specifications prepared by other engineers
- Support pilot and commercial sites through feasibility, permitting, FEED, EPC scope, commissioning, and operations
- Improve the infrastructure the team runs on - design memos, sizing tools, work instructions, and quality checklists
- Apply process simulation and, where it earns its place, AI-assisted modeling and digital twin work
03 WHAT YOU BRING WITH YOU
You're the engineer who reads someone else's heat balance and finds the assumption nobody wrote down. You want your name on packages that get built, and you'd rather work somewhere your judgment is the deciding input than somewhere it's one of nine reviews. You likely have:
- A four-year engineering degree in chemical, mechanical, bioprocess, or a related discipline
- 10+ years of technical experience in process engineering
- Broad engineering and operations knowledge across both internal projects and external partner work
- Experience specifying equipment such as reactors, tanks, heat exchangers, pumps, and vessels
- Strong experience with process simulation software (Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, ChemCAD, PRO II, UniSim, ProMax, HTRI)
- Working knowledge of process instrumentation, control valves, and control loops
- The ability to gather data, set priorities, and hit deadlines without being managed to them
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including with non-technical third parties
Strong plus
- Pilot plant design, commissioning, or startup experience
- Experience in bioprocess, fermentation, and separation equipment design and operation
- Process Safety Management experience in a regulated process industry
- Experience mentoring junior process engineers
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
AFTER 3 MONTHS
- You're Responsible Engineer on live projects and your packages are going out without rework
AFTER 6–12 MONTHS
- Engineering packages delivered on schedule across multiple concurrent projects
- Scale-up risks are being caught in design review rather than in the field
- The team's design tooling and standards are measurably better than you found them
04 COMPENSATION
This is an onsite role based in the Denver–Boulder Metro Area (Lafayette, CO), with travel up to 15% to pilot sites, laboratories, and vendor facilities. Relocation Assistance provided. The annual base salary range for this position is $140,000 – $180,000, commensurate with experience, plus equity. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
