Original job description

ABOUT ODE WITH ANTHROPIC

How do you turn a decades-old dataset into an industry-leading medical coding agent? Teach an AI receptionist to book appointments in Spanish? Automatically generate working data connectors from API docs? Build agents that write, test, and deploy their own software packages?

Anthropic is defining frontier AI. Ode is the team bringing frontier AI into practice.

We are a team of experienced builders who care deeply about getting complex AI systems into production, with strong conviction about what makes them succeed. As Anthropic’s services venture, we tackle the hardest, most consequential AI problems for companies with real stakes, working closely with their Applied AI and Product teams to turn frontier technology into real world impact.

We're backed by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs, General Atlantic, Leonard Green & Partners, Apollo Global Management, GIC, and Sequoia Capital. We're headquartered in SF with offices in San Jose, NYC, Raleigh-Durham, and Dubai.

THE ROLE

We're hiring our first Controller to build Ode's accounting function from first principles. The core mandate: bring our books in-house, support our first audit, and build a close and controls environment that absorbs acquisitions, new entities and rapid growth. You'd write the playbook for running controllership in an AI native way.

This role reports to the Head of Finance, and is based in our San Francisco office.

What you'll do:

Take the books in-house and get them audited: Transition accounting from our outsourced partner to a close you own
Build an AI-native close: Run the monthly, quarterly and annual close under US GAAP across every entity. Use Claude to automate reconciliations, accruals, flux and close prep until the manual steps disappear, on the way to a 5-day close.
Own revenue for a services business: Set ASC 606 policy across fixed-fee, reserved-team and milestone SOWs, success fees and pass-through costs. Partner with Commercial and Legal before deals sign so the treatment is clear before work starts.
Make controls that scale: Design controls over order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, payroll and the close, including human-in-the-loop review of AI-generated work, with evidence our auditors and investors can rely on.
Absorb growth: Own purchase accounting and integration for acquisitions, stand up new entities and intercompany, own the chart of accounts, and define requirements for our move off QuickBooks to a modern ERP.

WHAT YOU BRING:

You've built a controllership from scratch: You have 10+ years in accounting, including public accounting and 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller at a high-growth company. You've led a first audit and moved a company onto a real ERP.
You bring deep technical rigor: You're expert in US GAAP, especially ASC 606 for project-based, milestone and variable revenue, and comfortable with multi-entity consolidation and purchase accounting. CPA required.
You already overuse AI: You can show us something you built or automated in your accounting work with Claude, Cursor or similar, and you know where it still needs a human check. SQL or scripting is a plus.
You build lean by design: You default to better systems, automation, and AI before adding people or process.
You want to win: You have a high bar, move with urgency, and are deeply motivated to build something exceptional.

OUR VALUES

Overdeliver: We are writing the playbook on how to create enterprise value with LLMs, and building our reputation as the world’s best applied AI team.
Overuse AI: We go out of our way to experiment with the latest tools and share what we learn with our teammates - building a culture at the frontier.
Over "engineer" the culture: For every big decision, we ask “would this make Fractional a better or worse place for our team?”

LOCATION

San Francisco, CA

Full time, on site Monday through Thursday, plus some Fridays as needed, in our Financial District office, San Francisco
Typical hours 8:30am (or earlier) to 5:30pm, with flexibility for early mornings, moves and evening events
Able to lift up to 25 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation

BENEFITS

🏦 Competitive Compensation Package: Attractive salary aligned with your experience and skills.
📈 401k with Matching: Invest in your future with our company-matched retirement plan.
🌴 Unlimited PTO: Take the time you need to relax and rejuvenate.
🏥 Exceptional Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage: Comprehensive health benefits to keep you and your family healthy.
🚑 Health FSA: Manage out-of-pocket health expenses effectively.
🚌 Commuter Benefits: Make your travel to work easier and more affordable.
🏥 Life Insurance: Providing peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
🎉 Team Events and Activities: Regular events to build camaraderie and a strong team spirit.
