Essential Job Duties The Energy Engineer supports the university’s strategic energy management objectives by planning, developing, and implementing engineering projects and operational programs that improve utility system performance, reduce resource consumption, and enhance the reliability and sustainability of campus infrastructure. Working collaboratively with other Facilities Division Units and campus stakeholders, the position applies engineering principles, project management, and data-driven decision-making to deliver measurable operational and financial benefits across the university.
Primary responsibilities include:
Energy Data Management – Metering Systems Provide project management and technical oversight for the university’s utility metering infrastructure to ensure long-term reliability, accuracy, and expansion of campus metering systems. In collaboration with the Energy Data System Administrator, develop long-range metering strategies, assess system conditions, prioritize repairs and replacements, and plan capital investments. Lead meter replacement projects from planning through commissioning, coordinate with campus stakeholders to ensure compliance with university standards, and leverage metering data to support asset management, budgeting, and future campus growth.
Energy Supply & Use in Facilities – EPC/M&V Management
Manage the university’s Energy Performance Contract (EPC) measurement and verification (M&V) program to ensure accuracy, compliance, and long-term success of guaranteed energy savings projects. Coordinate data collection, performance reporting, and stakeholder engagement to validate contractual guarantees, support State reporting requirements, and identify opportunities for corrective action and continuous improvement. Develop standardized reporting tools, performance scorecards, and internal processes to monitor facility performance, address deficiencies, and expand M&V practices across existing and future EPC projects.
Energy Use in Facilities – EMAT Building Retuning Program
As a regional zone energy manager, the Energy Engineer oversees the execution of the EMAT Building Retuning Program across assigned campus facilities. The engineer analyzes Building Automation System (BAS) trend data and conducts facility walk-downs to identify, implement, and verify no- and low-cost operational adjustments to HVAC and control systems. Additionally, the role optimizes schedules and setpoint resets while tracking ongoing performance to maintain occupant comfort, prevent operational drift, and deliver long-term energy savings across their regional portfolio.
Energy Use in Facilities – Eco-Mode Energy Savings Initiative
Manage the university’s Eco-Mode Smart Scheduling Program to reduce energy consumption during periods of low building occupancy while maintaining occupant comfort and operational readiness. Collaborate with campus partners to identify scheduling opportunities, implement optimized building operating schedules across academic intersession periods, monitor energy savings and operational performance, and continuously refine program strategies to maximize energy and cost savings.
Energy Use in Facilities – Projects
Manage the planning, design, procurement, and execution of energy and water conservation projects that support NC State’s Utility Reduction Program (NURP). Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets, coordinate project delivery with campus stakeholders, and verify project outcomes to achieve measurable utility savings. Serve as the department’s subject matter expert for LED lighting initiatives by supporting campus lighting standards, identifying best practices, and developing scalable processes for implementing cost-effective lighting upgrades.
Energy Efficiency & Energy Program Management
Manage the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of university energy efficiency and resource conservation programs that reduce energy and water consumption, improve operational performance, and support the university’s sustainability goals. Collaborate with campus stakeholders to identify conservation opportunities, establish program standards and performance metrics, monitor results, and expand successful initiatives that deliver measurable utility savings and operational efficiencies.
