Original job description
The Solaris and Storage Administrator is an individual contributor who provides advanced, secure, hands-on operational support for Nokia’s NSA Retained infrastructure. The role independently owns complex administration and problem resolution across the retained Solaris/SPARC estate and its storage, backup, monitoring, privileged-access, and migration dependencies. The position serves as a subject-matter expert, leads technical improvements and recovery activities, and influences cross-functional execution while following NSA access restrictions, Nokia governance, customer-specific U.S.-only data-handling requirements, and chain-of-custody controls.
Administer the NSA Retained Solaris/SPARC estate, including T5 hosts, global and non-global Zones, LDOMs, Stromasys instances, and associated utility, test, support, jump, and bastion servers.
- Build, configure, patch, troubleshoot, and recover Solaris systems and Zones; validate zone status, services, networking, file systems, ZFS, access, and performance after incidents and planned changes.
- Administer retained SAN and NAS services, including NetApp systems, storage connectivity, pools, volumes, LUNs, shares, zoning, masking, multipathing, DNS, AutoSupport, and controller or service-processor issues.
- Map server dependencies on SAN switches, dedicated or shared storage, NetApp file services, and application data paths to support migration and operational decisions.
- Operate and troubleshoot NetBackup and tape-library services, including policies, schedules, drive paths, robotics, media availability, failed or frozen jobs, restores, and backup-health reporting.
- Verify that backup and restore paths preserve NSA Retained access boundaries; document restore activity, affected systems and data, and authorized access.
- Monitor retained servers and storage, maintain actionable alerts and dashboards, remove obsolete targets, and respond promptly to availability, capacity, connectivity, and performance issues.
- Lead or support incidents involving Solaris hosts and Zones, NetApp file shares, SAN or network paths, backups, physical hardware, and dependent applications; perform root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Execute migrations and data-center transition activities using approved NSA checklists, dependency validation, rollback plans, post-change testing, inventory updates, and change records.
- Enforce least-privilege access and U.S.-only support requirements; validate approvals and required NSA authorization before granting privileged, console, root, or remote access.
- Coordinate access removal, password and sudo controls, jump-host administration, vulnerability remediation, security monitoring, audit evidence, and compliance findings with authorized Nokia teams.
- Protect chain of custody for retained hardware and media; ensure failed disks and other data-bearing assets are handled, wiped, degaussed, moved, or disposed of only through approved procedures.
- Develop, review, test, and automate repeatable Solaris Zone and storage procedures; maintain scripts, runbooks, command records, training material, and operational documentation in approved NSA Retained repositories.
- Use Nokia incident, request, story, and change-management processes consistently, and coordinate with application owners, database, network, security, facilities, migration, compliance, and vendor teams.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, planned maintenance, migrations, recovery tests, and urgent production support.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex Solaris, storage, and backup issues; develop options, assess risk, and recommend sustainable resolutions.
- Lead technical planning and execution for lifecycle upgrades, migrations, resilience improvements, recovery exercises, and remediation initiatives.
- Define and improve operational standards, health checks, support models, and automation; identify systemic risks and drive preventive corrective actions.
- Mentor less-experienced administrators through technical reviews, structured troubleshooting, documented procedures, and hands-on knowledge transfer.
- Communicate technical risk, service impact, dependencies, and recommendations clearly to management, compliance stakeholders, application owners, and partner teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Typically eight or more years of enterprise infrastructure experience, including substantial hands-on administration of Oracle Solaris 10 or 11, SPARC platforms, storage, and backup technologies in business-critical environments.
- Demonstrated experience with Solaris Zones, LDOMs, ZFS, SMF, networking, patching, shell scripting, performance analysis, troubleshooting, and recovery.
- Hands-on administration of enterprise SAN and NAS platforms, preferably NetApp, including Fibre Channel or IP connectivity, LUNs, shares, multipathing, replication, snapshots, DNS, and support connectivity.
- Experience operating enterprise backup systems, preferably NetBackup and physical tape libraries, including policy administration, drive and robotic troubleshooting, restores, and recovery validation.
- Experience supporting tightly controlled infrastructure with privileged-access governance, least privilege, audit evidence, change control, incident management, and chain-of-custody requirements.
- Ability to satisfy Nokia employment, location, authorization, and access requirements applicable to the NSA Retained environment before privileged access is granted.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, lead complex technical activities, influence cross-functional stakeholders, mentor colleagues, and communicate risk and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred:
- Experience with Oracle T-series systems, legacy Solaris workloads, Stromasys emulation, clustered environments, and data-center migrations.
- Experience with NetApp ONTAP, SAN switching, storage dependency discovery, AutoSupport, service processors, and controller failover analysis.
- Working knowledge of Nokia operational processes and tools for incidents, requests, stories, changes, monitoring, and controlled migration checklists.
- Experience supporting U.S.-only or regulated environments and handling protected customer information under strict access and data-location controls.
- Relevant Oracle Solaris, NetApp, Veritas NetBackup, storage networking, security, or IT service-management certification.
