Senior Software Engineer - AI and Scientific Data Platforms

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and operation of applications that support scientific research and complex data workflows. This hands-on role combines full stack engineering with applied machine learning, graph data platforms, and cloud infrastructure. You will work directly with researchers and business stakeholders to translate their needs into maintainable software, guide other developers, and deliver systems that operate in customer-managed environments.

Key Responsibilities

· Lead technical design and delivery across user interfaces, backend services, relational databases, and graph databases.

· Build web applications using Angular or React and develop APIs and services using Python with FastAPI, Java with Spring Boot, or Node.js.

· Develop and deploy machine learning models and integrate large language models into applications, including workflows that extract structured information from unstructured documents.

· Design data models, ingestion pipelines, and graph queries that support large scientific datasets, network analysis, and research workflows.

· Build and maintain ETL pipelines for data lakes and high performance computing environments, coordinating data movement and processing across platforms.

· Deploy and operate containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes; maintain CI/CD pipelines and support configuration, upgrades, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

· Gather requirements directly from researchers and other stakeholders, explain technical tradeoffs, and demonstrate working software throughout development.

· Mentor developers through code reviews and technical guidance; support sprint planning, delivery tracking, and clear communication of progress and risks.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

· Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of application design and delivery.

· Strong backend development skills in Python, Java, or Node.js and experience building modern web interfaces with Angular or React and TypeScript or JavaScript.

· Experience designing APIs, working with relational databases, and building data ingestion or transformation pipelines.

· Practical experience integrating machine learning or AI capabilities into software applications.

· Experience with Git, Linux, containerized applications, CI/CD, and deployment to cloud or customer-managed infrastructure.

· Demonstrated ability to lead technical work, mentor developers, and collaborate directly with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience supporting federal research, biomedical informatics, cheminformatics, or other scientific computing programs.

· Experience with PyTorch, scikit-learn, RDKit, ASKCOS, LangChain, or Azure AI Document Intelligence.

· Experience with Neo4j or Memgraph, including graph modeling, query development, and analysis of large reaction or substance datasets.

· Experience with Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Supabase, Nextflow, Slurm, or private high performance computing environments.

· Experience with AWS, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Rancher, or the Prometheus monitoring stack.

· Familiarity with enterprise authentication, OAuth, SAML, PingFederate, or AWS SNS/SQS messaging.

· AWS Certified Developer - Associate, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals certification; experience supporting CMMI or ISO audit activities.
