Original job description

Summary

At the New York Power Authority, you will be empowered to think big, do good, and transform the energy industry. We are a collaborative team of over 2,400 energy technologists, IT specialists, business experts, hydro engineers, and diverse professionals leading the energy revolution. With state-of-the-art technology, advanced research and development, a modernized infrastructure, and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG), we provide New Yorkers with low-cost, clean, reliable power - and we are well on the way to becoming the first end-to-end digital utility in the country.

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support the hydroelectric mechanical engineering team responsible for maintaining and improving the reliability, availability, and performance of critical equipment at the Niagara Power Project. The intern will gain exposure to a broad range of power generation systems, including turbines, generators, bearings, and other balance-of-plant mechanical equipment.

Working alongside experienced engineers, the intern will assist with engineering evaluations, field inspections, equipment condition assessments, and the development of maintenance and repair recommendations. The intern will also learn how equipment is maintained and managed in accordance with applicable industry codes, regulatory requirements, and NYPA standards.

In addition to supporting day-to-day engineering activities, the intern will be assigned a meaningful project aligned with their experience and interests that can be completed during their summer internship. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in hydroelectric power generation and valuable insight into the engineering practices used to maintain and enhance the performance of one of the nation's largest hydroelectric facilities.

Our paid 10-week Summer Developmental Internship program runs from June 8th - August 13th, 2026. As an Intern, you will receive professional development, on-the job experience in the energy industry, exposure to executives, and networking opportunities to help build a solid foundation for your future career.

Applications will close on December 31st, 2026.

If you are passionate about our mission – to lead the transition to a carbon-free, economically vibrant New York through customer partnerships, innovative energy solutions, community engagement and the responsible supply of affordable, clean, and reliable electricity, we are looking for you!
