Original job description

The Safety Training Manager is a working manager responsible for delivering safety training and building a consistent, effective safety training program across NESL. Direct classroom and field instruction is a primary responsibility and is expected to occupy at least as much time as management and program administration. Reporting to the Director of Safety, this position works cooperatively with the Safety Team, Human Resources, and operational leaders to plan and deliver training. The role strengthens internal instructional capabilities, reduces reliance on third-party trainers, and establishes processes that support accurate records, clear communication, and sustained follow-through.

Safety Training Manager - What Will You Do? Safety Training Delivery & Program Development

  • Develop and deliver a substantial share of safety training through classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, practical exercises, and field coaching.
  • Support training needs across Materials, Construction, and other NESL operations. Adapt instruction to the work, hazards, and experience of the audience.
  • Develop and maintain useful lesson plans, instructional materials, knowledge checks, and practical evaluations. Review and update content as requirements, company standards, and operating conditions change.
  • Use participant feedback, incident learnings, and field observations with Safety Team and operational leaders to evaluate training effectiveness and identify needs for reinforcement or additional instruction.
  • Expand internal capacity through personal instruction, development of the Part-Time Safety Trainer, and coaching and qualification of Safety Specialists and other appropriate internal instructors.

Safety Team Collaboration

  • Supervise and schedule the Part-Time Safety Trainer. Establish clear expectations for instruction, preparation, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Work with the Safety Team to plan and deliver winter safety training and ongoing training throughout the year, with defined instructional assignments.
  • Establish training schedules, instructional standards, documentation requirements, and agreed deadlines in cooperation with the Safety team.
  • Partner with the Safety Coordinator on training administration, including enrollment, attendance, records, completion tracking, and reporting. The Safety Coordinator maintains the systems, records completed trainings, communicates training gaps, and produces reports.

Coworker Education & Industry Representation

  • Partner with Human Resources to develop and deliver other approved coworker education.
  • Serve as an NESL industry ambassador through approved conference presentations, professional associations, industry partnerships, and other external engagements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with industry peers, training providers, and professional organizations. Bring relevant practices, resources, and learning opportunities back to NESL.
  • Collaborate with the equipment operator training and driver training teams on common safety needs.
  • May perform other duties as assigned. This may include supporting other day-to-day safety initiatives as needs arise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Education, Construction Management, or a related field. Significant relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering safety training in mining, construction, manufacturing, or industrial operations.
  • Experience developing training programs and coordinating training schedules, instructors, and resources.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, and applicable safety regulations and training requirements.
  • Maintain instructor qualifications and certifications required for assigned courses, with the ability to obtain additional qualifications as needed.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to lead training and facilitate group discussions.
  • Highly organized with strong follow-up and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and training records or related database systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, field-oriented environment.
  • Ability to travel regularly, including overnight travel, and work early mornings, nights, and weekends as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and compliant with NESL Driving Standards.

Personal Characteristics & Competencies

  • Entrepreneurial mindset balanced with a keen understanding of risk awareness.
  • Confident, adaptable and proactive professional.
  • Strong organizational influence and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to lead change and follow through on commitments.
  • Alignment with NESL Cultural Goals:
  • Focus & Integrity To Do What’s Right
