Original job description
National Technologies (NTI), a Network Connex Company, is a premier turnkey installer of fiber optic and data center infrastructure. Working on our team puts you on the leading edge of innovation in the digital communications space.
If being a part of a tight-knit organization that operates in some of the most advanced technology environments around the world sounds like a dream job, NTI might be the right fit for you! With the perks of a large organization, NTI remains true to its roots as a home-grown company with an open door culture that welcomes new ideas and encourages professional growth. We set you on the right path with careful onboarding and thorough training programs that prepare you for success in your role and beyond.
The Senior Construction Manager is accountable for the coordinated field execution of large, complex, or multiple National Fiber Team projects or work areas. This role provides senior-level oversight to Construction Managers and field leadership to deliver safe, high-quality work on schedule and within approved budgets, in accordance with customer specifications, NTI standards, and contractual requirements. The Senior Construction Manager translates operational priorities into executable field plans, resolves cross-team constraints, validates forecasts and performance, develops Construction Managers, and serves as an escalation point for field execution. Project Managers retain responsibility for contractual and commercial project administration, while Operations leadership retains division-level resource and policy authority.
Primary Responsibilities
- Field Leadership & Management Oversight
- Direct and coach assigned Construction Managers and field leadership across multiple crews, shifts, or work areas.
- Establish consistent expectations for daily kickoffs, shift handoffs, production reviews, and field accountability.
- Validate CM staffing plans, assignments, leadership coverage, and escalation practices.
- Intervene in systemic field obstacles and coordinate solutions across projects or disciplines.
- Develop succession plans and identify high-potential field leaders.
- Project Execution & Operational Planning
- Oversee execution against IFC drawings, scopes of work, customer standards, NTI standards, safety requirements, and approved schedules.
- Integrate three-week look-ahead plans, construction sequencing, access constraints, material readiness, and labor loading.
- Review CM execution plans and confirm that handoffs between installation, splicing, testing, validations, and closeout are coordinated.
- Lead recovery planning for underperforming work fronts and elevate scope or schedule changes to Project Management.
- Standardize field execution practices across assigned projects.
- Safety Leadership
- Champion zero-incident expectations and visible field leadership.
- Verify CM enforcement of JHAs, safety briefings, PPE, inspections, incident reporting, near-miss investigations, and Stop Work Authority.
- Review trends from safety audits and corrective actions; ensure timely closure and lessons learned.
- Coordinate with Safety leadership on higher-risk operations and recurring hazards.
- Production & Resource Management
- Own aggregate production performance across assigned work fronts and review daily and weekly production reporting.
- Validate productivity assumptions and manpower forecasts for fiber installation, conveyance, racks/cabinets, splicing, testing, labeling, and closeout.
- Balance crews and specialized resources within delegated authority to protect critical milestones.
- Analyze labor efficiency, planned-versus-actual output, crew utilization, and recurring production constraints.
- Implement corrective actions when production trends threaten commitments.
- Quality Assurance & Technical Compliance
- Provide oversight of field inspections, workmanship, test results, punch lists, and customer acceptance readiness.
- Verify adherence to applicable BICSI and other relevant standards, manufacturer requirements, NTI quality standards, and customer specifications.
- Review recurring defects, rework trends, and corrective action effectiveness.
- Coordinate with Field Engineering, QA/QC, and Project Management to resolve technical ambiguities and document deviations through approved processes.
- Customer Relations & Escalations
- Represent NTI in customer coordination meetings and significant field-level escalations.
- Provide accurate status, constraint, and recovery updates with consistent messaging across assigned Construction Managers.
- Resolve operational concerns within delegated authority and promptly escalate contractual or commercial issues.
- Maintain professional written and verbal communication that protects customer confidence and NTI’s reputation.
- Workforce Development & Accountability
- Coach Construction Managers on planning, communication, performance management, and documentation.
- Review staffing, onboarding, training needs, rotations, and leadership coverage with Operations and HR.
- Ensure consistent, fact-based employee accountability and appropriate use of established corrective action processes.
- Support performance evaluations, promotion recommendations, and leadership development.
- Subcontractor Oversight
- Monitor subcontractor safety, quality, manpower, productivity, and schedule commitments through assigned Construction Managers.
- Coordinate field integration, workfront readiness, and performance recovery plans.
- Review field quantities and supporting documentation for invoice validation; refer contractual and rate matters to authorized personnel.
- Escalate persistent subcontractor performance or compliance concerns.
- Logistics & Asset Coordination
- Consolidate material, tool, vehicle, rental equipment, and specialty testing/splicing resource forecasts.
- Coordinate with Logistics and Fleet & Asset Management to address shortages, calibration, repairs, movement, and accountability.
- Validate material staging, inventory controls, and readiness against upcoming work packages.
- Schedule & Recovery Management
- Review three-week look-aheads and critical path risks with Construction Managers and Project Management.
- Coordinate cross-project dependencies, shift transitions, and workfront availability.
- Develop measurable recovery actions, responsible owners, and follow-up dates for schedule variance.
- Communicate field schedule impacts early enough for formal project controls and customer coordination.
- Cost Control & Financial Stewardship
- Review labor budgets, overtime, productivity, equipment utilization, rework, travel, and material waste trends.
- Validate field inputs used in estimates to complete (ETCs), labor forecasts, and weekly cost reviews.
- Recommend operational changes to protect gross profit while maintaining safety and quality.
- Identify potential change-order events and ensure timely documentation and referral to Project Management.
- Do not authorize unapproved commercial commitments or scope changes.
- Reporting, Documentation & Controls
- Ensure timely and accurate daily reports, headcount, production quantities, quality records, safety observations, and issue logs.
- Audit reporting consistency across Construction Managers and correct gaps in supporting records.
- Maintain clear action registers, escalation records, and recovery-plan status.
- Support turnover, as-built documentation, and project closeout readiness.
- Cross-Functional Communication
- Act as the senior field coordination point among Operations leadership, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Field Engineering, Safety, Logistics, customers, and subcontractors.
- Lead structured operational reviews and communicate decisions, owners, deadlines, and escalations.
- Align multiple work fronts without bypassing project controls, customer authorization, or reporting requirements.
Leadership Expectations
- Lead through Construction Managers rather than replacing routine CM ownership of daily field execution.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, composure, professionalism, integrity, and consistent accountability.
- Make decisions using field data, contractual requirements, technical standards, and operational risk.
- Build repeatable systems, mentor successors, and drive continuous improvement.
- Escalate material safety, financial, schedule, staffing, or customer risks promptly.
