Original job description
Company Overview At NetCov, we specialize in delivering cutting-edge IT and cybersecurity solutions designed to protect and optimize the digital infrastructure for the industries we serve. We differentiate ourselves from our competition through our deep and intimate knowledge of our customers’ business.
About the Role As a Sr. Cloud Engineer at NetCov, you will understand both the architecture of our systems and the engineering required to build them. You know the level of detail needed to keep systems in place that deliver consistent uptime and support for our clients' escalated and most business-impacting issues. Your primary duties include cloud automation, DevOps, triage, review, response, design, implementation, and maintenance of cloud infrastructure solutions and client environments. You will also serve as a technical leader on the team, leading process improvement and mentoring junior engineers.
In a typical week, you will ensure the stability of our clients' infrastructure through triage and problem solving, and you will build and engineer infrastructure either from the ground up or to fit within a client's existing environment. What sets a Sr. Cloud Engineer apart is greater scope, responsibility, mentoring, and knowledge. We expect those in this role to understand the end goal of a project before work begins, to peer review their colleagues' projects, and to identify patterns and commonalities across client networks and alerts. Senior engineers are also expected to anticipate technical risks, make sound architectural decisions, and deliver secure, cost-conscious solutions that can be supported after project completion.
Accountabilities
- Cloud Infrastructure Design & Deployment
- Build, configure, and deploy secure and scalable cloud infrastructure in Microsoft Azure and AWS.
- Codify security baselines and guardrails in Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools so every deployment is secure, repeatable, and scalable by default.
- Drive infrastructure automation and DevOps improvements, helping establish standards for reusable modules, version control, code reviews, and secure deployments.
- Lead migrations from on-premises or hosted environments to AWS or Azure, evaluating dependencies, cutover sequencing, rollback plans, and hybrid integration requirements.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, deployment validation, testing, and configuration management.
- Continuously improve CI/CD pipelines to enhance efficiency, reliability, and security.
- Leverage Terraform, Python, PowerShell, and other automation tools to provision, manage, and optimize infrastructure.
- Design and troubleshoot AWS/Azure networking and hybrid connectivity, including VPCs/VNets, VPNs, routing, DNS, firewalls, and private connections.
- Implement cloud governance and access controls, including account/subscription structures, AWS IAM, Microsoft Entra ID, RBAC, and least-privilege permissions.
- Analyze cloud spend, utilization, and performance, recommending resource rightsizing, capacity improvements, and cost optimization opportunities.
- Security & Resiliency
- Implement infrastructure solutions that increase the stability, resiliency, and security of client and internal cloud environments.
- Harden cloud workloads, operating systems, networks, identities, and storage using security baselines and applicable compliance requirements.
- Design, implement, and test backup, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions against defined recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO).
- Follow change control processes, assess technical implementation risks, and define validation and rollback plans for production changes.
- Project Delivery
- Develop technical implementation plans, engineering task breakdowns, effort estimates, dependencies, and risk assessments in coordination with PMO.
- Peer review technical designs and deliverables, and recommend standard operating procedures (SOPs) for approval through the established Cloud leadership process.
- Own technical execution of assigned projects, communicate progress and blockers, and promptly escalate delivery risks or potential scope changes to PMO and Cloud leadership.
- Provide expert technical assistance for internal teams and clients, including configuration, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and issue resolution across infrastructure, systems, and applications.
- Troubleshoot and upgrade Azure and AWS environments, supporting both implementation and migration projects.
- Participate in technical discovery, solution scoping, and migration readiness reviews to validate requirements and dependencies before work begins.
- Complete technical validation, as-built documentation, monitoring, knowledge transfer, and handoff to ongoing support teams before project closeout.
- Managed Cloud Operations
- Serve as a senior escalation resource for complex AWS, Azure, and hybrid incidents; perform root cause analysis and drive corrective actions.
- Improve proactive monitoring, alerting, logging, availability, capacity, and performance across client environments to reduce repeat incidents.
- Maintain accurate engineering task updates, time entries, change records, and support documentation in designated company systems.
- Client & Team Collaboration
- Mentor junior and peer engineers on new or complex technologies, and review escalation requests to guide resolution.
- Lead process improvement initiatives across the Cloud team, using recurring issues and alert patterns to standardize solutions and reduce repeat incidents.
- Deliver an exemplary customer service experience, building strong relationships with clients and internal teams.
- Communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, approachable manner.
- Partner with Security, Networking, Infrastructure, Service Delivery, and PMO to ensure coordinated technical execution and supportable client solutions.
- Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
- Document technical processes, configurations, root cause analyses, and project details for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute to knowledge bases and internal training resources to strengthen team expertise.
- Continuous Learning & Growth
- Stay current with evolving cloud technologies, security practices, and industry trends.
- Pursue professional certifications and development opportunities, while mentoring and sharing knowledge with peers.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Technology, IT Engineering or equivalent level of work experience and certifications
- 10+ years of engineering experience
- 6+ years of hands-on AWS or Microsoft Azure engineering, with deep expertise in both platforms.
- Demonstrated experience independently designing, delivering, troubleshooting, and supporting complex cloud and hybrid infrastructure solutions.
- Strong working knowledge of Windows Server and/or Linux, Active Directory/Entra ID, IAM/RBAC, DNS, cloud networking, and hybrid connectivity.
- Advanced proficiency in multiple cloud infrastructure domains such as compute, networking, identity, storage, security, monitoring, and disaster recovery.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform or equivalent), Git, scripting (Python/PowerShell), and deployment automation; Docker and Kubernetes experience a plus.
- Experience with cloud monitoring, security controls, backup and disaster recovery, and cloud cost/performance optimization in production environments.
- Ability to correlate client incidents, telemetry, and alert data to identify root causes and recurring patterns.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage concurrent technical deliverables, dependencies, deadlines, and documented processes.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical clients and internal team members
- Preferred certifications: AWS Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, Azure Administrator (AZ-104), Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305), or equivalent.
