Original job description
The Senior Systems Engineer plays a key role in developing and delivering quality solutions by working closely with stakeholders and cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle, this position translates business, regulatory, customer, and operational needs into clear product context, requirements, functional and logical design, interfaces, engineering decisions, and verification and validation expectations. The ideal candidate brings a strong systems-thinking mindset, collaborates effectively across disciplines, and uses objective evidence to balance product outcomes, technical risk, quality, and delivery needs.
Some of the impactful contributions you’ll make as MISO’s Senior Systems Engineer include:
- Translate business, regulatory, customer, and operational needs into clear, feasible, verifiable, and traceable product requirements and acceptance expectations.
- Establish product context, boundaries, operational scenarios, assumptions, constraints, dependencies, and affected capabilities.
- Develop technology-independent product functional and logical designs that define expected behavior, functions, interactions, information flows, interfaces, and responsibility allocation.
- Define product verification and validation needs, methods, evidence expectations, coverage criteria, and technical-readiness inputs.
- Lead product-level engineering decision analysis and trade studies by documenting alternatives, evaluation criteria, evidence, assumptions, impacts, and technical risks.
- Perform product change and impact analysis across requirements, architecture, interfaces, data, processes, dependencies, verification evidence, and operations.
- Identify and manage product technical risks, failure modes, and quality attributes, including security, reliability, resilience, maintainability, usability, performance, and supportability.
- Maintain product requirements, functional and logical models, interface definitions, traceability, decisions, and other authoritative engineering baselines.
- Assess requirements quality, design alignment, verification coverage, evidence sufficiency, unresolved gaps, and residual technical risk to support accountable readiness decisions.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and improve engineering methods, tools, standards, templates, training, and reusable practices.
You’ll need the following skills to be successful as our Senior Systems Engineer:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant systems engineering experience applying engineering practices across product or system lifecycle activities such as context definition, requirements, design, integration, verification, and validation.
- Strong understanding of requirements development, allocation, decomposition, quality assessment, traceability, and lifecycle management.
- Knowledge of functional and logical design, system modeling, information flows, and interface management in complex technical environments.
- Experience with verification and validation planning, requirement coverage assessment, objective evidence, technical-risk evaluation, and readiness recommendations.
- Ability to facilitate structured trade studies, evaluate alternatives, analyze change impacts, and communicate evidence-based engineering recommendations.
- Strong problem-solving skills, including systems thinking, failure-mode analysis, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and resolution of ambiguous or complex technical issues.
- Familiarity with engineering documentation, quality practices, and tools such as IBM DOORS Next, Cameo, etc.
- Certified as a Systems Engineer by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) preferred.
Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
