Original job description

Description About Millennial Software Millennial Software, part of Expedition Technology, is revolutionizing the landscape of security and defense by leveraging our core competencies in software development, automation, DevSecOps, and machine learning.

Job Description

Clearance Level Must Currently Possess: None required to start. Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Millennial Software is seeking two Engineering Interns for Summer 2027 (May 17 – August 6) at our Chantilly, VA headquarters to work on Forge, our DevSecOps and capability platform. The project adds an automated codebase assessment stage to Forge: pointed at a repository, it reports what the code is built from, how it is structured, how ready it is to deploy, and produces a written narrative a program manager can read without opening the code. The first run covers every Millennial Software repository, giving leadership a consolidated view of the portfolio during Expedition integration.

Three analyzers (inventory, structure, deployment) feed a weighted score; an LLM layer converts findings into a narrative and ranked remediation list, with narrative quality graded against a mentor-authored rubric in Keystone. Every finding traces to a specific file or dependency. You will be paired with mentors, work in daily standups, and present the full portfolio report at a leadership readout.

Essential Functions

  • Build the inventory analyzer: languages, frameworks, dependency age, license posture across every MS2 repository
  • Build the structure analyzer (complexity, coupling, test coverage, dead code) and deployment analyzer (container readiness, configuration externalization, secrets hygiene, CI presence)
  • Implement the weighted scoring model and portfolio roll-up; emit a JSON record per run so scores can be tracked over time
  • Build the LLM narrative layer that produces a readable report and ranked remediation list; evaluate narrative quality against the rubric in Keystone
  • Run one external open-source repository end to end as proof the stage generalizes
  • Deliver the full portfolio report and present at the leadership readout

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. citizen able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
  • Rising senior (or exceptional rising junior) pursuing a BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field; meets GPA requirement
  • Strong Python (or Go/Rust) and comfort with Git, Linux, and reading unfamiliar codebases
  • Coursework or project experience in software engineering practices: testing, CI/CD, containers, or static analysis
  • Available full time, on site in Chantilly, VA, for the 12-week program

Nice to Have

  • Experience with static analysis or code-quality tools (SonarQube, Semgrep, CodeQL, linters) or dependency/license scanners
  • Experience building with LLM APIs, prompt design, or output evaluation
  • Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI, or similar DevSecOps tooling
  • Interest in software modernization and defense software delivery

Program Details

  • Dates: May 17 – August 6, 2027 (12 weeks, full time, on site in Chantilly, VA with remote flexibility)
  • Mentorship: assigned primary and backup mentor; daily standups; bi-weekly sprint planning and demos; 30/60-day checkpoints, mid-summer and final reviews
  • Evaluation rubric: code quality, documentation, teamwork, communication, initiative, impact
  • Final deliverable: recorded pipeline run and leadership readout; all targets set by the mentor team
