Original job description

Overview

At Microsoft Quantum, we aim to empower science and scientists to solve the world’s biggest problems by realizing advanced computing platforms at the intersection of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information technology. Microsoft Quantum will change the world of computing and help solve some of humankind’s currently unsolvable problems. For more information about our team, visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum.

We are seeking a highly skilled and committed Senior Software Engineer to join our team. This role is central to advancing our quantum software roadmap and requires passion for software development, cloud, AI, and quantum computing.

The Quantum Fleet Platform team builds the shared infrastructure that powers Microsoft’s quantum computing efforts. It owns the foundational software, services, and tooling that provision, orchestrate, monitor, and maintain a growing fleet of lab and production systems. The fleet spans multiple qubit modalities, including neutral-atom and topological qubits, along with the equipment that supports them: electrical characterization setups, qubit measurement and control systems, cryogenic and test stations, and other specialized hardware. By providing a common platform for deployment, data collection, and operational health, the team enables other engineering teams to build, test, and operate quantum systems reliably and at scale. You’ll collaborate closely with software engineers, hardware designers, and experimental physicists to turn research breakthroughs into robust production capabilities. The work spans software, firmware, and hardware-adjacent systems, offering opportunities to shape Microsoft’s fault-tolerant quantum computing stack.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate the services and agents that provision, configure, and manage a diverse fleet of quantum lab and production systems, spanning neutral-atom and topological platforms.
Build parts of a distributed system that spans cloud services and on-premises lab clients, prioritizing security, scale, and resilience to intermittent connectivity.
Develop telemetry, data-collection, and observability pipelines that give engineers and physicists real-time insight into system health, utilization, and experimental data.
Automate deployment, configuration, calibration, and software updates across the fleet so that new systems can be brought online quickly and consistently.
Expose fleet capabilities through Azure-native APIs and resource models.
Set and improve availability, reliability, and performance targets for fleet services, and drive consistent monitoring and operational practices at scale.
Mentor other engineers, raise the bar on code quality and engineering practices, and help shape the architecture of the fleet platform as it grows.

Other:

Embody our culture and values.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide either proof of their country of citizenship or proof of their U.S. permanent residency or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may verify status using other documents, where applicable.
Ability to leverage AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency (e.g., performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, day to day task automation).
Ability to work in an “AI-first” environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.
