Original job description

Overview

We are advancing technological innovation through quantum computing, which has the potential to reshape how complex problems are addressed in science, medicine, materials research, and industry. At Microsoft Quantum, we aim to empower scientists to solve some of the world's biggest problems by developing advanced computing platforms at the intersection of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information technology. The Microsoft Quantum team is dedicated to developing the first scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer. Our work spans quantum hardware, error correction, and integration with Azure. Our accomplished, diverse international team is focused on building a scalable quantum computing system. Our full-stack strategy encompasses breakthroughs in quantum device physics, scalable readout, and control infrastructure powered by cryoelectronics. As quantum computing enters a pivotal phase of accelerated growth, this position offers an opportunity to contribute to a transformative technology. Microsoft is seeking a Quantum Technical Program Manager (TPM), at the Senior to Principal level, to lead the end-to-end delivery of next-generation quantum hardware systems. You will drive cross-functional execution across research, engineering, and external partners to develop scalable, production-ready quantum solutions. Working closely with subsystem research and development leaders in areas such as control, packaging, and test and measurement, you will align roadmaps, manage risks, and deliver critical milestones. This high-impact leadership role calls for deep technical expertise, strong program management skills, and a customer-focused mindset. You will collaborate with physicists, quantum theorists, experimentalists, research and systems engineers, technical program managers, supply chain experts, cloud architects, and external partners to accelerate the scale-up of topological qubits and quantum systems. If you thrive on complex program challenges, can navigate ambiguity, and are passionate about foundational technologies, we invite you to help shape the future of quantum computing. At Microsoft, our mission - to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more - guides how we partner with customers to deliver trusted, impactful solutions. With a growth mindset culture, we innovate responsibly and measure success by shared progress - people, teams, and customers. Join us to do meaningful work that changes the world and helps shape what’s next for everyone.

Responsibilities

Drive program execution: Lead program management for pivotal quantum hardware initiatives, from concept development and engineering design through prototyping, validation, operational scaling, and ongoing delivery. Collaborate with system architects, research scientists, and hardware engineers to achieve program goals.
Strategic planning and roadmapping: Work with program management leadership, engineering teams, and executive stakeholders to develop and maintain a roadmap for hardware platform advancement. Align technical milestones, resources, schedules, and risk responses with Microsoft Quantum's long-term goals.
Cross-disciplinary coordination: Align teams working in quantum device physics, cryoelectronics, materials science, hardware control, manufacturing, supply chain, integration, and cloud hardware operations to deliver reliable, scalable hardware solutions.
Supplier and partner engagement: Manage relationships with external foundries, research laboratories, equipment vendors, and strategic partners. Establish clear requirements and support compliance with Microsoft's standards for quality, safety, and data security.
Risk management: Identify, monitor, and mitigate technical, schedule, and operational risks. Apply lessons learned and adapt plans as technologies and program needs evolve.
Agile delivery: Oversee Agile program processes and ceremonies, provide regular reviews and updates, and remove obstacles to the timely delivery of critical milestones.
Customer focus: Incorporate feedback from internal and pilot customers, including researchers, manufacturing partners, and Azure Quantum platform teams, to improve hardware and processes.
Executive communication: Develop concise, data-driven updates on program status, milestones, risks, dependencies, and impact for executive and other stakeholders.
Culture and values: Promote respect, collaboration, integrity, and inclusivity. Mentor team members and foster a learning-oriented environment within the quantum TPM organization.
Other: Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.
