Help Keep Our Operations Moving

At Metro Group, we've been turning scrap metal into opportunity since 1976. We're a family-owned company that values hard work, strong relationships, and doing things right. We're looking for an Inventory Manager who brings organization, accuracy, accountability, and a hands-on approach to keeping our inventory accurate and our operations running smoothly.

What You'll Do

The Inventory Manager is responsible for maintaining inventory accuracy, establishing effective inventory controls, and ensuring inventory is properly tracked across assigned operations. Working closely with yard leadership, operations, purchasing, sales, and accounting, this role helps ensure materials are properly received, classified, recorded, stored, and shipped.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain accurate inventory records for ferrous and nonferrous metals across multiple locations.
  • Monitor material movement from receiving and processing through storage and shipment, ensuring inventory transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Coordinate physical inventory counts, investigate differences, and work with teams to resolve discrepancies.
  • Investigate inventory variances, identify root causes, and work with operations and accounting to implement corrective actions and prevent recurring discrepancies.
  • Work with yards and operations teams to verify material classifications, recoveries, weights, storage locations, variances, downgrades, and provide timely feedback.
  • Reconcile inventory information with scale tickets, shipping and receiving documents, and system records.
  • Partner with accounting to support inventory valuation, weekly and month-end reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Monitor inventory levels and aging, identifying slow-moving material, unusual balances, shortages, or excess inventory.
  • Improve inventory procedures and controls to reduce errors, prevent loss, and strengthen accountability.
  • Support purchasing, production, and shipping decisions by providing timely and reliable inventory information.
  • Train employees on inventory procedures and reinforce consistent practices across assigned locations.
  • Travel to assigned Metro locations as needed to conduct physical inventories, review inventory controls, investigate discrepancies, and support consistent inventory practices.
  • Promote safe work practices while performing counts, inspecting materials, and working around equipment and yard traffic.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • Experience in inventory management, inventory control, warehouse operations, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and follow through on solutions.
  • Confidence working with numbers, spreadsheets, inventory software, and operational reports.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work with formulas, sorting, filtering, and inventory reports.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with both office and yard teams.
  • The ability to prioritize competing needs in a busy operating environment.
  • A practical approach to improving processes and holding teams accountable.
  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to be hands-on in the yard when needed.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and follow through.
  • A commitment to integrity, customer service, continuous improvement, and working safely.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in scrap metal recycling, manufacturing, logistics, or another industrial setting.
  • Familiarity with ferrous and nonferrous metals, material grading, and weight-based inventory.
  • Experience supporting multiple locations.
  • Previous leadership or employee training experience.
  • Experience using inventory management, ERP, or accounting systems.
  • Experience with Excel pivot tables, data analysis, and reporting.
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, operations, or a related field-or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position works in both office and active recycling yard environments. Responsibilities may require walking on uneven surfaces, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and working near mobile equipment and industrial operations. Required personal protective equipment must be worn in designated areas. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
