Original job description

Maximus is a trusted federal partner supporting the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in delivering essential services that help taxpayers navigate and meet their tax obligations. Through innovative solutions, operational excellence, and a commitment to public service, we help the IRS enhance efficiency, improve customer experiences, and strengthen mission outcomes.

Joining Maximus means becoming part of a collaborative, mission-driven organization where teamwork, accountability, and professional growth are central to our culture. We invest in our employees through training, professional development, and career advancement opportunities, empowering our teams to deliver meaningful results while supporting one of the nation's most important public service missions.

This part-time position is contingent upon contract award and position availability and is expected to require approximately 20 hours per week. A current MBI is preferred.

Maximus is seeking a Sr. Assembler Language Computer (ALC) Programmer to support our Internal Revenue Service (IRS) IO&A project.

The Sr. ALC Programmer will provide program analysis, design and development support, maintain source code and modify and/or upgrade code, and conduct testing and debugging, as necessary.

This role is remote, and candidates must meet requirements to obtain and maintain an IRS Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) clearance (active IRS Moderate Risk MBI is a plus).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead and contribute to technical architecture, system design, and strategic development planning.
Develop complex, high‑impact software components and ensure architectural alignment across teams.
Troubleshoot and resolve system‑wide, multi‑component issues using deep analysis and innovative solutioning.
Champion (using your preferred verb alternatives) improvements in development methodologies, tools, standards, and processes.
Provide technical leadership, coaching, guidance, and oversight to development teams; review work of others and ensure quality delivery.
Collaborate across functions (QA, DevOps, Product, Security) to define and execute integrated technical strategies.

Job-Specific Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Create, update, test, and maintain IBM ALC programs.
Conduct trial runs of programs and software applications to be sure that they will produce the desired information and that the instructions are correct.
Write, update, and maintain computer programs or software packages to handle specific jobs such as tracking inventory, storing or retrieving data, or controlling other equipment.
Write, analyze, review, and rewrite programs, using workflow chart and diagram and applying knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, and symbolic logic.
Perform or direct revision, repair, or expansion of existing programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements.
Consult with managerial, engineering, and technical personnel to clarify program intent, identify problems, and suggest changes.
Perform systems analysis and programming tasks to maintain and control the use of computer systems software as a systems programmer.
Compile and write documentation of program development and subsequent revisions, adding comments to software application code so others can understand the program.
Prepare and maintain detailed workflow charts and diagrams that describe input, output, and logical operation, and convert them into a series of instructions coded in a computer language.
Work with CSA’s (Computer Systems Analysts) to define and resolve problems in running computer programs.

Minimum Requirements

'- Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study and 7+ years of relevant professional experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
