Original job description

Who are we?

MATTE is a 360° full-service creative studio at the convergence of hype, storytelling and design. We bring people together to inspire new ways of engaging, to provoke long term progress, and to entertain audiences around the world, while helping forward-thinking brands and institutions nimbly and truly do the same. Our studio capabilities range from strategic ideation and insights, creative development, branding and identity, experiential, web design and development, campaigns and content creation, all the way through full-scale production and execution.

About this role:

MATTE is looking for a curious, visually driven Design Intern to join our creative team in New York. You’ll support branding, campaign, and experiential projects, helping bring ideas to life through layouts, mockups, graphics, and presentations. Working alongside senior designers, you’ll sharpen your design skills, explore new approaches, and learn how creative concepts develop into finished work.

Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

Support the design team across branding, campaigns, and experiential projects.
Assist with day-to-day design production, including signage, environmental graphics, asset creation, and preparation of production-ready files.
Help develop creative presentations, layouts, mockups, and visual assets that communicate ideas clearly.
Contribute to visual research, moodboards, and early-stage concept exploration.
Bring ideas and design support to MATTE’s own brand, creative, and studio projects.
Participate in creative reviews and gain exposure to the full design process, from concept development through final execution.

Desired Skills & Capabilities

Strong visual sensibility and a foundational understanding of typography, layout, and composition.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, and Figma.
A portfolio showcasing your design thinking and skills. School and personal projects are welcome.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage tasks across multiple projects.
A proactive, collaborative approach, with an openness to feedback and an eagerness to learn.
Interest or experience in motion, digital design, 3D, or emerging creative tools, including AI, is a plus.

About the Internship:

Get a closer look at life inside MATTE, a creative studio working across culture, brands, and experiences. Our internship program offers opportunities to learn from experienced professionals, contribute to creative projects, and build skills that support your career goals.

What You’ll Gain:

Hands-on learning in a collaborative creative environment.
Guidance and feedback from industry professionals.
Exposure to the creative process, from initial ideas through execution.
Opportunities to build your professional network and explore career paths.
Academic credit, subject to your school’s requirements and approval.

Program Details & Requirements:

Must be enrolled in a university undergraduate or master’s program.
Must be available for a minimum of 16 hours per week, working two days on-site at our New York City offices.
Must be available for the full program, from February 3 through May 12, 2027. All internships begin February 3, 2027.

This is an unpaid internship that may qualify for academic credit. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits.

Everyone is welcome at MATTE - we’re passionate about building a team that reflects the diversity of our community and creating an environment where our differences are celebrated. MATTE provides equal employment opportunity (EEO) to all persons regardless of age, color, national origin, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, race, religion, creed, gender, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, genetic information, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law. In addition, MATTE will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
