Original job description

Overview

M&J Engineering is seeking a motivated and passionate Civil Design Engineer with six (6) years of experience to join our growing design team in Farmingdale, NY.

We are looking for someone who enjoys engineering design and is excited to learn. Someone who takes pride in their work and is excited by the opportunity to turn ideas into real-world projects that improve the quality of the environment on Long Island.

The ideal candidate has experience in any combination of civil infrastructure, building-related site design, roadways, drainage, utilities, or municipal projects. We value resourcefulness, diligence, initiative, and a willingness to learn just as much as experience in a particular discipline.

This position is for someone who wants to design, develop their technical expertise, and make engineering design the focus of their career.

This position offers the opportunity to work on high-impact public infrastructure projects that improve water quality, reduce flooding, and strengthen community resilience throughout New York.

M&J Engineering, D.P.C. (M&J) is a quality provider of multi-discipline engineering and construction management services with a focus on Innovative and State-of-the-Art Solutions. We specialize in providing full-service construction management, CE&I, program management, and design services for a full spectrum of industries encompassing heavy highway, roadway, bridge, railroad, tunnel, airport, seaport and marine, commercial and institutional facilities, ITS, mechanical, electrical, environmental, water, wastewater, utilities, and design-build projects for both new infrastructure and rehabilitation efforts.

Since its inception in 2004, M&J has steadily expanded into an employee-owned engineering firm of more than 300 professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional service to our clients. We foster an inclusive workplace that attracts, develops, and retains talented professionals while maintaining our commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action.

Responsibilities

Perform civil engineering design for a variety of green infrastructure, roadway, site development, coastal, and municipal projects.
Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
Assist with grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility layouts, roadway improvements, and site design.
Utilize AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other engineering design software.
Collaborate with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams.
Independently research technical challenges, explore design alternatives, and develop practical solutions.
Work under the guidance of experienced engineers while progressively taking ownership of design assignments.
Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and quality control processes.
Continuously develop technical knowledge of engineering standards, design practices, and emerging technologies.

Apply through this site or send your resume to recruit@mjengineers.com.

Salary Range: $94,000 to $124,800 annually ($45/hr to $60/hr )

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
6 years of civil engineering design experience.
Experience in one or more areas of civil infrastructure, site development, roadways, drainage, sewer, or municipal engineering.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D preferred.
Familiarity with engineering calculations, design standards, and construction documents.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and seek guidance when needed.
Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
EIT certification preferred but not required.

What We're Really Looking For

Beyond technical qualifications, we want someone who is truly passionate about design engineering and who wants to be part of a great team, and grow professionally.

Someone who:

Is naturally curious and wants to understand the why behind engineering decisions.
Enjoys tackling challenging problems and finding creative, practical solutions.
Takes initiative to learn independently but equally values mentorship and collaboration.
Is open to working across different civil engineering disciplines rather than being limited to one specialty.
Takes personal pride in producing thoughtful, accurate, high-quality designs.
Wants to become an exceptional design engineer, not simply hold an engineering position.

Benefits

M&J Engineering is a leader in delivering innovative engineering and construction management services to a diverse client base. We seek professionals who are passionate about leadership, quality, safety, innovation, and developing the next generation of engineers and construction professionals.

As an employee-owned firm, we provide opportunities for professional growth, leadership development, and long-term career advancement.

Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

Competitive salary commensurate with experience
Medical, dental, and vision insurance
401(k) retirement plan
Life and disability insurance
Paid time off and paid holidays
Professional development and tuition reimbursement
Licensure and certification reimbursement
Employee Stock Ownership opportunities (where applicable)
Employee Assistance Program
Career advancement within a growing, employee-focused organization
