Original job description
PRIMARY PURPOSE
At M.G. Newell, the Senior Project Engineer takes an engineered sanitary system from customer need to operating installation. This role combines technical design and hands-on project management in roughly equal measure. Working closely with customers, Outside Sales, vendors, fabricators, installers, and internal teams, the engineer develops sanitary fluid-handling solutions, creates P&IDs and hydraulic design calculations, prepares scopes and estimates, and manages project execution through fabrication, installation, commissioning, and startup. As a senior member of the engineering team, this engineer also mentors less experienced engineers, serves as a technical resource, and shares the judgment and practical experience needed to strengthen engineering practices across the organization. It is a hands-on role for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving fluid-flow and equipment-integration problems, managing cost and schedule, working directly with customers, and seeing a design come to life in the field.
JOB DUTIES
- Lead the conceptual and detailed design of large-scale sanitary manufacturing and cleaning systems, including process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment layouts, fluid-flow and hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing and pressure-drop calculations, and pump, valve, and equipment selection and specification.
- Partner with customers and Outside Sales to define operating requirements and develop practical engineered-to-order solutions; prepare project scope, estimates, proposals, and technical presentations.
- Serve as project manager for assigned projects from order through closeout, developing and managing project schedules, budgets, resource needs, procurement and vendor activities, action items, risks, and customer and internal communications.
- Lead technical and cross-functional design reviews and ensure the design meets customer requirements, applicable sanitary standards, safety expectations, constructability needs, budget, and schedule.
- Lead onsite installation, commissioning, and startup as the customer point of contact; coordinate field activities and subcontractors, resolve technical and construction issues, promote safe work practices, and support projects through completion.
- Remain up to date on safety training and certification and promote safe work practices on job sites and in the shop.
- Manage project scope and commercial changes, including change identification, change orders, cost and schedule impacts, project documentation, punch lists, and turnover packages.
- Coordinate suppliers, fabricators, subcontractors, and internal resources to integrate third-party equipment and instrumentation and keep project execution aligned with technical, cost, and schedule requirements.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and serve as a technical resource on sanitary system design, fluid handling, project execution, industry standards, and continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution.
- Seven or more years of progressive experience designing and delivering industrial fluid-handling, sanitary manufacturing, or engineered-to-order systems, with demonstrated responsibility for both engineering design and project management on complex projects.
- Working knowledge of hygienic or sanitary system design principles and experience in food and beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, personal care, or a similarly regulated manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated engineering capability in fluid systems, including development and interpretation of process flow diagrams and P&IDs, fluid-flow and hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, pressure-drop calculations, pump, valve, and equipment selection and sizing.
- Strong customer-facing communication, technical leadership, and problem-solving skills, with working proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications and experience using ERP and project management systems.
- Demonstrated project management capability, including scope development and control, estimating and proposals, budgeting and cost tracking, scheduling, risk management, vendor and subcontractor coordination, customer communication, change management, installation, and startup or commissioning.
- Ability to travel to customer and vendor facilities; approximately 35% travel is expected. Travel frequency and duration vary by project phase and may include local or overnight travel as well as multi-day or extended onsite assignments during installation, commissioning, and startup.
