Logan Finance Corporation VP, Application Development Encompass | Software Delivery | Quality Engineering | Engineering Standards Full-Time | Technology Division | $175,000 – $195,000 + Annual Bonus Location | US Remote About Logan Finance Corporation Logan Finance Corporation is a wholesale Non-QM mortgage lender headquartered in Hauppauge, NY. We specialize in alternative lending products including Bank Statement, DSCR, Asset Depletion, and Foreign National programs. Our Mortgage Technology team drives innovation across loan origination systems, proprietary platforms, and data infrastructure - building the tools that give Logan's lending operations a competitive edge. This role sits at the intersection of software delivery, quality engineering, and engineering governance. Logan's technology organization has grown faster than the discipline around it, and this position exists to establish that discipline: how software is designed, reviewed, tested, released, and held to a consistent standard across every platform Logan builds. Position Overview The VP, Application Development owns engineering practice across Logan's Mortgage Technology organization. The role is responsible for Encompass administration and several offshore development teams, the quality function end to end, and carries architecture and coding standards across every Logan application surface - including those owned by peer leaders. This is a builder’s role rather than a caretaker’s. The team and the systems exist; the engineering discipline around them has to be established. A critical part of that work happens in partnership with the Project Manager – Change Delivery role, who owns the business-side UAT process. Where that role is responsible for building the process, intake, and coordination framework, this role is responsible for the technical infrastructure that makes testing repeatable, scalable, and trustworthy. Building that capability - together - is the core of the first year. The position is hands-on enough to review a design on its merits and judge whether a code review was effective. It reports to the SVP of Mortgage Technology and works closely with Change Management, Technical Product Management, fulfillment operations, and vendor partners including ICE/Encompass, Sapiens, and Logan's offshore delivery partner.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Practice & Software Delivery
- Own the software development lifecycle across the team: design review, code review, branching and release discipline, and the standards that make them consistent rather than individual
- Establish and enforce the standard for AI-assisted development, including what review an AI-generated change requires before it merges
- Identify and remove inefficiency in development and testing processes, and demonstrate the improvement in measured terms
- Direct delivery through the development lead and project manager, holding schedule, scope, and technical quality together rather than trading one against the others silently
- Maintain architecture decision records and technical documentation sufficient for a successor to act on
- Quality Engineering, Testing & UAT
- Build a formal UAT process in partnership with the Project Manager – Change Delivery role, establishing the technical infrastructure, entry and exit criteria, sign-off ownership, and defect triage that make testing repeatable and scalable across the organization.
- Establish independent verification for Encompass changes
- Own regression testing strategy, including automation for the Encompass Smart Client where justified
- Define and baseline defect escape to production, and report against it
- Partner with the AI Engineering function on test data capability, which supports both Encompass testing and agent evaluation
- Engineering Standards Across Application Surfaces
- Own the architecture patterns, shared component library, authentication model, coding standards, and deployment pipeline that every Logan application surface follows - including but not limited to LoganConnect, the internal application platform, the reporting surface, and CLARA
- Review and approve the design of any new surface, or any material architectural change to an existing one, before build begins
- Arbitrate what belongs in the shared platform rather than in an individual application, so capability is built once
- Maintain a documented exception process, so divergence is a decision with an owner rather than something discovered later
- Exercise this authority across reporting lines: the standard governs how systems are built, while product direction and delivery dates remain with each surface owner
- Encompass & Platform Operations
- Own Encompass administration, including configuration, business rules, personas, workflows, and the administrators who maintain them
- Own automation engineering and production monitoring for the Sapiens decisioning environment
- Own Logan's AWS application environment, which is also expected to include the Sapiens DAG application following the migration completing in early 2027, consistent with the standing direction to consolidate on AWS
- Deliver broker credentialing automation to requirements owned by Mortgage Technology Support, covering both onboarding and offboarding
- Act as subject-matter owner for Encompass, vendor, and platform integration APIs
- Team Leadership & Vendor Direction
- Lead through three established leads - development, project management, and quality - rather than directing every engineer personally
- Direct the technical work of vendor-supplied engineering resources without personnel authority over them, setting direction, allocating work, and owning delivery outcomes
- Develop the two Logan Encompass administrators, including depth and cross-coverage
- Partner with the vendor relationship owner on staffing needs and capability gaps, while commercial terms remain with the SVP
- Collaboration & Strategic Communication
- Partner with Encompass administration and Technical Product Management to ensure technology initiatives align with business rules and platform functionality
- Engage regularly with the SVP of Mortgage Technology to provide insights and strategic recommendations
- Act as a liaison between development and business teams to ensure alignment
- Participate in Logan's twice-yearly onsite planning cycle and contribute to the Mortgage Technology roadmap
Required Qualifications Leadership Experience
- 7+ years in software development with at least 3 years managing multiple development teams, including managing through leads rather than directing every engineer personally
- A leadership style that prioritizes the growth and engagement of the people on the team - consistent 1:1 time, direct and honest feedback, and a collaborative environment where engineers feel heard and supported
- Demonstrated experience establishing software development lifecycle discipline where it did not previously exist, rather than inheriting and maintaining a mature process
- Experience owning a quality function, including test strategy, defect management, and the measurement that shows whether quality is improving
- Experience directing offshore or vendor-supplied engineering teams, including the coordination and communication differences that come with working across time zones
Technical Skills
- Hands-on development background sufficient to review a design on its merits, judge whether a code review was effective, and be credible with senior engineers
- Proficiency with modern software delivery tooling - Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and release management
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure, AWS preferred, sufficient to make and defend architecture decisions
- Experience with REST API design and integration across enterprise systems
- Comfortable with SQL and data querying
Domain Knowledge
- Mortgage lending technology experience, with working knowledge of a loan origination system in production use
- Understanding of the loan origination lifecycle and how LOS, CRM, pricing, and decisioning systems interact
- Judgment about build versus configure - Logan standardizes on vendor platforms and extends them, and the role must know when customization is warranted and when it is a liability
- Experience operating in a regulated environment, including what has to be evidenced and what has to be auditable
Work Style & Communication
- Strong written communication - able to produce standards, architecture decision records, and exception documentation that other teams can follow and cite
- Able to exercise authority across reporting lines through relationships rather than escalation
- Comfortable in a lean organization where establishing a function means doing some of the work personally before it can be delegated
- Meticulous attention to detail - changes to Encompass configuration and underwriting workflow have direct downstream impact on loan decisions
Preferred Qualifications
- Encompass administration or development experience, including an understanding of what Encompass configuration can and cannot safely absorb
- Experience building or substantially extending a loan origination system
- Non-QM product knowledge, including the underwriting and pricing complexity those products carry - Bank Statement, DSCR, Asset Depletion, Foreign National, etc.
- Test automation experience with thick-client applications, where conventional web automation approaches do not apply
- Experience setting standards for the use of AI coding tools in a production development process
- Familiarity with Sapiens Decision, or comparable rules and decisioning platforms
- Experience integrating with ICE/Encompass via Partner Connect (EPC) or SDK
- Infrastructure-as-code, container-based deployment, and modern CI/CD practice
- Experience partnering with Change Management functions in a regulated environment
- Familiarity with MISMO data standards
