Job Overview
Reporting to the Director of Product Development and Compliance, the Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day leadership, execution, and continuous improvement of the sanitation program. This position ensures that manufacturing rooms, packaging areas, equipment, utensils, and designated facility areas are cleaned and sanitized in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Master Sanitation Schedules (MSS), cGMP requirements, and internal quality standards. The role provides direct oversight of sanitation personnel and works closely with Quality, Production, Maintenance, and Warehouse to prevent contamination and cross-contact, support production readiness, and maintain an audit-ready facility.
This position is an onsite role and located in Valencia, California.
What You Will Do
- Plan, schedule, and supervise daily sanitation activities for manufacturing rooms, blending areas, packaging lines, equipment, utensils, floors, walls, drains, common areas, and other designated facility areas; assign responsibilities and ensure adequate staffing, supplies, and resources to complete work on schedule.
- Coordinate sanitation schedules with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Warehouse to support product changeovers, production start-up, and manufacturing readiness while minimizing downtime.
- Ensure all cleaning and sanitizing is performed according to approved SOPs, work instructions, the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS), applicable 21 CFR Part 111 cGMP requirements, Good Documentation Practices (GDP), and internal Quality standards.
- Maintain and execute the MSS; ensure sanitation records are accurate, legible, attributable, contemporaneous, complete, and retrievable; review records for timely execution and escalate missed or overdue activities.
- Conduct pre-operational inspections, line clearance, and post-sanitation release; verify equipment and areas are free from product residue, foreign material, standing water, cleaning chemical residue, and other unacceptable conditions before release.
- Support ATP, allergen, microbiological, or other sanitation verification activities as required by approved procedures and ensure failed results are escalated and corrected before release.
- Ensure cleaning and sanitizing chemicals are correctly identified, stored, diluted, and applied, and verified for concentration, contact time, and temperature per approved procedures and manufacturer instructions; ensure sanitation tools and equipment are identified, maintained, stored, and segregated to prevent contamination and cross-contact.
- Ensure sanitation practices support allergen-control and cross-contact prevention programs, including appropriate cleaning during allergen and product changeovers.
- Support special or enhanced cleaning following maintenance work, construction, spills, contamination events, high-risk products, or other unusual conditions.
- Immediately report sanitation-related deviations, contamination concerns, foreign material, pest observations, chemical issues, or other conditions that could affect product quality or safety; escalate equipment or facility conditions that prevent effective cleaning (e.g., damaged surfaces, leaks, corrosion, hygienic-design concerns) to Maintenance and Quality.
- Participate in investigations of sanitation failures, contamination events, allergen concerns, customer complaints, and other sanitation-related deviations; support root-cause analysis, CAPA implementation, and effectiveness monitoring.
- Supervise, coach, train, and develop sanitation employees; ensure they are trained and qualified on applicable SOPs, chemical handling, PPE, equipment cleaning, allergen controls, cGMPs, and safety requirements before working independently; monitor performance, attendance, productivity, and adherence to procedures.
- Support FDA inspections, customer audits, certification audits, and internal audits; maintain sanitation operations and records in an inspection-ready condition.
- Monitor sanitation performance, including MSS completion, repeat cleaning failures, pre-operational findings, recleaning events, verification trends, and cleaning turnaround times; identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
- Perform other sanitation-related duties and special projects as assigned.
What You Will Bring -
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree, technical training, or coursework in food science, sanitation, microbiology, manufacturing, or a related discipline preferred.
- 3-5 years of manufacturing experience in a dietary supplement, food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, or other cGMP-regulated manufacturing environment preferred.
- 1-2 years of supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of cGMP requirements, sanitation SOPs, Master Sanitation Schedules, equipment cleaning, and manufacturing changeovers.
- Experience with cleaning and sanitizing chemicals (handling, concentration verification, PPE), allergen control, cross-contact prevention, pre-operational inspections, and sanitation verification methods.
- Experience supporting FDA, customer, NSF, SQF, or other third-party audits preferred.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and electronic documentation systems.
Other Requirements
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or off-shifts as needed to support manufacturing and sanitation schedules.
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
