Laboratory Service Engineer 3

About the role

Lam Research is seeking a highly motivated Lab service engineer 3 position, to join the Corporate Metrology Lab. This role focuses on advanced 3D Tomography (3DT), and FIB-SEM characterization, supporting the development and deployment of next-generation metrology solutions for advanced semiconductor devices.

The successful candidate will work closely with leading technologists, researchers, and cross-functional engineering teams to develop innovative characterization methodologies, data analysis workflows, and application solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lab Operations: Support daily metrology activities and maintain efficient laboratory operations.
• Experimentation & Analysis: Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and provide recommendations to support process development.
• Metrology Projects: Lead metrology projects and deliver solutions aligned with customer and business needs.
• Tool Maintenance: Follow established SOPs to maintain tool health, performance, and availability.
• SPC Monitoring: Monitor critical metrology equipment and processes using SPC methodologies.
• Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve technical challenges and support customer requirements.
• Communication: Clearly communicate technical results, recommendations, and project updates to stakeholders.
• Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to improve processes, tool utilization, and laboratory efficiency.
• Schedule Flexibility: Maintain flexibility to support weekend operations as needed to maximize 3DT tool utilization and meet customer turnaround commitments.

Qualifications:

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in metrology, materials characterization, or a related technical field.
• Demonstrated experience with advanced characterization techniques, including:
• Focused Ion Beam (FIB)
• Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
• Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
• Experience working in laboratory and cleanroom environments, including semiconductor equipment, sample/surface preparation, and analytical characterization techniques.
• Hands-on experience with SEM, FIB, e-beam lithography, and/or photolithography. FIB-SEM experience is highly preferred.
• Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies.

Lam offers a variety of work location models based on the needs of each role. Our hybrid roles combine the benefits of on-site collaboration with colleagues and the flexibility to work remotely and fall into two categories – On-site Flex and Virtual Flex. ‘On-site Flex’ you’ll work 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with the opportunity to work remotely for the balance of the week. ‘Virtual Flex’ you’ll work 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, and remotely the rest of the time.

Salary

CA San Francisco Bay Area Salary Range for this position: $32.21 - $70.19.

The above salary range for this position is relevant to applicants that reside or work onsite in the California, San Francisco Bay Area only. Salary offers will depend on factors that include the location you work from, your level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience and comparison to other employees already in this role. Actual salary may vary from salary offered due to numerous factors including but not limited to unpaid time off, unpaid leave, company mandated shutdown, and other relevant factors.
