Original job description
Requisition ID: 183003
Job Level: Mid Level
Home District/Group: Kiewit Mining District
Department: Field Supervision
Market: Mining
Employment Type: Full Time
Position Overview
Kiewit Mining District is seeking an experienced Superintendent 2 to lead field operations and supervise crews on active mining projects. This position is responsible for safely and effectively executing day-to-day field activities while meeting production, quality, schedule, and cost expectations.
The Superintendent 2 will provide hands-on leadership to foremen, field engineers, craft employees, and subcontractors while coordinating closely with project leadership. The ideal candidate has a strong mining or heavy civil background, proven field leadership experience, and the ability to plan work, solve problems, and drive safe, efficient production.
Kiewit’s superintendent model places significant responsibility on the role for field execution, including safety, quality, schedule, cost performance, and team development.
District Overview
Kiewit Mining Group specializes in mine management, production, infrastructure construction, and maintenance. The district's capabilities include exploration, geologic analysis, permitting, feasibility studies, planning, facility design, contract administration, and transportation coordination.
Responsibilities
Lead day-to-day field operations and crews to safely meet production and project goals. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work complies with Kiewit, project, and regulatory requirements. Plan and coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and daily work activities. Lead and develop foremen, field engineers, craft employees, and other field personnel. Monitor production, quality, schedule, and cost performance and make adjustments as needed. Coordinate work with project management, engineering, equipment, safety, and other project teams. Identify and resolve field issues that may impact safety, production, quality, or schedule. Maintain required field documentation and communicate progress and upcoming work to project leadership. Support subcontractor coordination and client relationships as needed. Mentor developing field leaders and help build strong, accountable crews.
These responsibilities are consistent with Kiewit’s existing mid-level superintendent framework, which includes developing junior superintendents, managing field and subcontractor activities, supporting client coordination, maintaining field records, managing cost-related activities, and planning project completion.
Qualifications
8+ years of field construction, mining, or related operations experience preferred. 5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably as a Superintendent, General Foreman, or similar field leader. Strong knowledge of mining, heavy civil, earthwork, production, or equipment-intensive operations. Experience leading foremen and craft crews in an active field environment. Knowledge of MSHA requirements and mining safety practices preferred. Strong planning, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-based environment and adapt to changing operational priorities. Ability and willingness to work at various project locations as business needs require.
The experience levels above follow Kiewit’s existing mid-level superintendent posting, which calls for 8+ years of relevant operational experience and 5+ years of superintendent-level supervisory experience. The MSHA/mining-specific qualification is adapted from your Mining District Mine Manager, which identifies knowledge of MSHA requirements and mining regulations as a key qualification.
