At Keysight, people come together to explore new ideas, challenge what's possible, and advance the technologies defining the future. Here, you'll find opportunities to do your best work, take your career further, and thrive in an award-winning culture. Learn more about our benefits.

Responsibilities

Our team, part of Keysight Laboratories' High Frequency Technology Center (HFTC), is a software development group. We design and build custom software used across Keysight's Santa Rosa wafer fab, test floor and assembly lines for everything from wafer maps to electrical test orchestration and automation, data transformation, and extensions of our manufacturing execution systems (MES). The chips we make go into Keysight's own instruments.

This role is about software engineering: designing, building and improving software that others depend on. We work closely with partner teams like test engineering: they own measurements and product test plans, and we own the software they use to scale those plans to every product.

Most of our work is in C#/.NET: desktop applications that keep running when the network or a server goes down, plus web applications and APIs in ASP.NET, backed by SQL Server. We employ code quality techniques including static analysis, code review, CI/CD, automate distribution through internal package feeds, and capture telemetry to streamline monitoring and diagnosis. Newer server-side services run in containers on OpenShift.

What you'll do:

  • Build new applications from scratch for engineering groups, from first requirements to production, and help other groups build their own.
  • Design shared libraries, APIs, MCP servers and other tooling that developers and engineers across the organization build on.
  • Build data pipelines and ETLs that move and transform manufacturing data between databases, applications and commercial platforms.
  • Extend and integrate with our manufacturing execution system (Critical Manufacturing), a growing part of our work.
  • Develop the software that runs our wafer test stations: device sampling, wafer location navigation, dynamic statistical device health assessment, and complex data forwarding.
  • Extend core systems such as our wafer map platform and the framework our test engineers use to write test plans.
  • Build factory support software such as SPC systems, calculators and analytical tools.
  • Work side by side with the engineers, operators and technicians who use our software, turning their needs into tools they rely on.
  • Keep production software reliable and diagnosable, and improve existing codebases through better architecture, testing and modernization.

What success looks like:

  • First 90 days: you've shipped changes to at least two of our systems through code review, fixed a production issue that came in through Sentry, and written down how one part of a system works that only one person understood before. You can explain how a wafer moves from fab through test to assembly, and which of our systems touch it.
  • First year: you've made major contributions to several projects across our systems, working alongside senior engineers on the larger ones, and engineers bring requests to you directly.

Qualifications

This role may be filled at multiple levels depending on experience and skill.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2-10+ years of professional software development in C#/.NET (preferred), or in Java or C++ with a willingness to work in C#.
  • Relational SQL: you write non-trivial queries and can figure out why one is slow.
  • Experience getting up to speed on a large existing codebase used by real users, and changing it safely.
  • Automated testing and a Git pull-request workflow with code review.
  • Methodical debugging of production systems: you form hypotheses and test them with a debugger, logs and data.
  • Working directly with internal customers, and documenting as you go.

Desired (no one has all of these; strong software skills come first):

  • Manufacturing, industrial or lab data systems; semiconductor experience (wafer maps, lots, yield) is a bonus.
  • Integrating software with equipment or other vendors' systems: device APIs, file and message interfaces, MES or ERP.
  • Designing frameworks or libraries used by other developers.
  • Windows desktop development with WPF/MVVM.
  • NET web applications and APIs.
  • CI/CD (Jenkins), production monitoring (Sentry), and deployment with PowerShell or Chocolatey.
  • Containers: Docker, OpenShift or Kubernetes.
