Description

Does working on the cutting edge of technology excite you, knowing that the path to success has yet to be written?

Are you a committed problem solver with enthusiasm for thermal challenges?

Do you enjoy developing, analyzing and prototyping novel engineered materials and structures for high temperature applications?

Do you have experience in thermal and structural modeling, and analyzing thermal response of materials to characterize structures in extreme environments?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking an engineer to apply thermal and structural analysis skills to subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flight vehicle applications! You will be joining a multidisciplinary team of engineers with a broad range of experience, from both internally at APL and multiple external, government, university, and industry organizations!

As a Thermal and Structural Engineer, you will...

Conduct research and development to advance the state of the art in hypersonic materials, thermal protection solutions, component- or system-level thermal structural modeling & analysis.
Collaborate with subject matter experts across multiple disciplines to deepen your understanding of strike weapon systems, and develop and improve analytical methodologies for evaluating critical structures and components.
Independently and collaboratively perform thermal and structural modeling & analysis to support program objectives, inform design decisions, and address technical challenges.
Document technical approaches, analyses, and results, and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to government sponsors and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

Possess a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Have at least 3 years of relevant experience in thermal and/or structural modeling and analysis, preferably for aerospace or defense applications.
Have at least 3 years of relevant experience in developing, validating, and applying computational models to support engineering design, performance assessment, and testing.
Have hands-on experience performing thermal and/or structural simulations using finite element analysis (FEA) software, such as Abaqus, ANSYS, or similar tools.
Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

Possess an MS degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Have 5 or more years of relevant experience in thermal and structural modeling and analysis for aerospace applications, including high-temperature structures, thermal protection systems, or advanced materials.
Demonstrate proficiency in thermo-mechanical FEA, including coupled thermal-structural analysis, using software such as Abaqus or ANSYS.
Have demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, or leading small technical teams.
Hold an active Top Secret security clearance.
