POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Architect is a senior individual contributor within Ainsworth’s Game Development Studios, responsible for improving the technology and production pipelines used to develop, validate, build, and deliver slot games for North American and Global markets. The role supports Class II, Class III, Historical Horse Racing (HHR), and other North American markets. This position defines architecture and guides delivery of shared game and math code libraries, build systems, production systems, server systems, tooling, and automation. Working across the Studios, Central Technology Team, Systems, and Platform Development, the Technical Architect translates studio needs into practical shared solutions, advances effective AI usage, and improves development speed, quality, and reliability. POSITION REPORTS TO: SVP of Studios, North America
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In this position, the Technical Architect will be responsible for the following primary functions:
- Lead architecture and design for shared game and math code libraries, build and production systems, server integrations, developer tools, and automation supporting multiple studios and markets.
- Partner with engineers, mathematicians, artists, audio teams, QA, and producers to identify workflow bottlenecks and prioritize improvements with measurable production value.
- Act as the technical liaison between the Studios, Central Technology Team, Systems, and Platform Development; align roadmaps, clarify interfaces and ownership, resolve dependencies, and coordinate adoption of shared capabilities.
- Define modular architectures, APIs, versioning, and compatibility standards that enable reuse while accommodating differences in game behavior, outcome determination, platforms, and market requirements.
- Improve continuous integration, automated testing, build orchestration, asset processing, packaging, and release workflows; support reproducible builds, artifact traceability, and controlled promotion through required approvals.
- Lead practical adoption of AI development assistants, generative AI, and agentic automation for activities such as coding, testing, documentation, content workflows, and troubleshooting. Evaluate accuracy, quality, productivity gains, and operating costs before scaling adoption.
- Establish AI usage practices with technology, security, and compliance stakeholders, including protection of proprietary code, game math, and assets; approved data access; human review; and validation of generated outputs.
- Create prototypes, reference implementations, and selected production components to validate designs and accelerate delivery; guide engineering teams through implementation, integration, and rollout.
- Collaborate with Systems and Platform Development on server services and game interfaces, including progressive or other shared features where applicable; define integration, reliability, and support requirements.
- Work with math, QA, and compliance teams to incorporate validation, configuration control, and certification evidence into development workflows.
- Assess build-versus-buy options and technical trade-offs; maintain an achievable architecture roadmap and migration plans balancing production schedules, technical debt, maintainability, and total cost.
- Conduct design and code reviews, document architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and support adoption through clear guidance, training, and collaboration across teams.
- Measure results using indicators such as build times, iteration time, pipeline reliability, defect rates, shared-library adoption, and developer effort saved; use findings to prioritize further improvements.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 15+ years of relevant software engineering experience, including substantial responsibility for architecture or technical leadership across multiple teams or complex systems.
- Demonstrated success delivering shared libraries, developer tools, production pipelines, or engineering platforms from requirements and design through implementation and sustained adoption.
- Practical experience evaluating and integrating AI-assisted development or automation, with evidence of quality validation and measurable benefits.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in regulated slot game development, including one or more of Class II, Class III, route/VLT, or HHR markets; ability to learn additional market architectures and constraints.
- Experience with Unity or comparable game engines, reusable game frameworks, math simulation and validation tools, or art and audio content pipelines.
- Experience with gaming platform or server integrations, certification workflows, legacy system modernization, and deployment of shared technology across multiple studios.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
This position will require:
- Strong software architecture skills, including modular design, APIs, system integration, dependency management, testing, security, reliability, and performance optimization.
- Strong hands-on programming ability in C# and/or C++, with the ability to review and integrate across both ecosystems; proficiency with Python or similar scripting languages for tooling and automation.
- Experience with source control, CI/CD, automated testing, build and release engineering, package management, and artifact repositories in production environments.
- Ability to design integrations involving server services, databases, and distributed systems and select appropriate on-premises or cloud deployment approaches.
- Understanding of AI coding assistants, LLM integrations, and automation workflows, including evaluation methods, context and access controls, human oversight, and cost management.
- Ability to translate studio needs into technical requirements, communicate trade-offs to technical and nontechnical audiences, and influence decisions across teams without direct reporting authority.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, planning, and mentoring skills, with a practical approach to introducing change into active production.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
