If you’re invigorated by our mission, values, and drive to change the world - we’d love to have you apply. Position Summary We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Software Engineering Manager to serve as a senior technical individual contributor responsible for the architecture, development, maintenance, and long-term sustainment of embedded software platforms. This role provides technical leadership across Embedded Linux-based products and focuses on software strategy, product reliability, lifecycle management, and technical execution rather than direct people management. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Embedded Linux, the Yocto Project, C/C++, and software development for ARM- and Intel-based platforms. The role will serve as a technical leader for product sustainment, defect resolution, technology refresh, firmware modernization, and future product evolution while establishing durable internal ownership of critical Hub and Terminal software.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and architectural direction for embedded Linux software platforms across the product lifecycle.
- Lead the design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of embedded software using C and C++.
- Drive long-term product sustainment, including firmware updates, defect resolution, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and technology refresh activities.
- Own and evolve Yocto-based Linux distributions, Board Support Packages (BSPs), Linux kernel configurations, device trees, and bootloader customizations.
- Lead investigation and resolution of complex field, customer, manufacturing, integration, and system-level software issues.
- Guide development and maintenance of software for ARM- and Intel-based embedded platforms.
- Define reusable software architecture, coding standards, engineering practices, and quality expectations.
- Review software designs, architecture proposals, code changes, test strategies, and release readiness.
- Collaborate with Systems, Hardware, FPGA, Test, Cybersecurity, Manufacturing, Product, and Program Management teams.
- Evaluate technical risks, modernization opportunities, component obsolescence, and platform migration needs.
- Support automated build, test, release, and CI/CD improvements for embedded software.
- Mentor engineers and influence technical decisions across programs without direct personnel management authority.
- Support critical customer escalations and communicate technical findings, risks, and resolution plans to stakeholders.
- Help transition critical knowledge and development ownership from contractors to internal engineering teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
- 12+ years of embedded software or firmware development experience, including senior technical leadership responsibilities.
- Extensive experience developing production embedded systems using C and C++.
- Deep expertise in Embedded Linux development and the Yocto Project.
- Hands-on experience developing and maintaining Linux BSPs, kernel configurations, device trees, and bootloaders such as U-Boot.
- Experience supporting ARM-based and/or Intel-based embedded processor architectures.
- Demonstrated success leading complex technical initiatives across teams and programs without direct management authority.
- Strong software architecture, system integration, debugging, performance analysis, and root-cause analysis skills.
- Experience supporting released products through maintenance, sustainment, customer support, and technology refresh cycles.
- Experience with Git, peer review, configuration management, and modern software development practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues to varied stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Experience developing Linux device drivers and integrating hardware interfaces such as Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART, USB, CAN, GPIO, PCIe, and storage devices.
- Experience with networking and communications systems and protocols.
- Experience with real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS.
- Experience with secure boot, authentication, encryption, vulnerability remediation, and embedded cybersecurity practices.
- Experience with FPGA/software integration and heterogeneous processing platforms.
- Experience with Python, Docker, Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, automated testing, or related engineering tools.
- Experience modernizing legacy software, migrating platforms, and reducing dependence on external development resources.
- Experience in mission-critical, aerospace, defense, telecommunications, or other high-reliability embedded product environments.
