Original job description

Archived listing. The details below describe a past opening.

Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) builds the products that power infrastructure, solutions, and data management our customers need most. Our teams design and develop the hardware and software that connect infrastructure, accelerate computational workloads, integrate across the stack, protect data continuity, and deliver the platforms, applications, and diagnostics our customers rely on every day at enterprise scale.

Some product builders follow the rules. Ours rewrite them.

Within ISG, innovation isn't just about creating new technology- it's about challenging assumptions and reimagining how work gets done. Engineers define intent, author precise specifications, and orchestrate AI agents that execute at speed and scale. AI is embedded throughout our development process, helping us move faster, learn quicker, and deliver greater impact. Yet the most important contribution remains uniquely human: deciding what to build, designing how it should work, and applying the judgment needed to earn our customers' trust. When your products power critical infrastructure around the world, that responsibility matters.

We move quickly toward the work that matters most. We reward experimentation, encourage bold thinking, and remove unnecessary barriers so great ideas can become reality faster. Our teams embrace a customer-first, first-to-market mindset, transforming rapid feedback into better products and better outcomes. We aren't looking for people who are content with the status quo- we look for builders who question it, improve it, and occasionally rewrite it.

If you're energized by solving complex systems challenges, excited to work alongside AI to amplify your impact, and motivated by the opportunity to shape what's next instead of simply maintaining what's been done before, you'll find your place here.

Senior Principal Engineer, Hardware Engineering - AI Server Systems

The reputation of Dell Technologies for delivering award-winning hardware is legendary and our Hardware Engineering team is at the heart of it. We design and develop analogue as well as digital hardware products – not just computer or network hardware devices but peripherals too. Recognized for our high level of technical expertise in a variety of engineering disciplines, we’re involved across the development lifecycle – from research to the building, testing and delivery of completed products. Innovators in our field, we lead the way in exploring new concepts, approaches, processes, materials and components.

What you’ll achieve:

As a Senior Principal Engineer, Hardware Engineer on the AI Platforms and Rack Scale Infrastructure team you will architect and develop next-generation AI server and rack-scale platforms. In this role, you will provide technical leadership across complex hardware development efforts, drive system-level problem solving, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative infrastructure solutions that power advanced AI workloads. You will work alongside electrical, firmware, mechanical, thermal, power, and manufacturing teams to influence product direction, resolve challenging technical issues, and help deliver industry-leading AI platforms for strategic customers. Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as a Senior Principal Engineer in Austin, Texas. (relocation assistance available).

You Will:

Lead hardware design and system engineering activities for next-generation artificial intelligence server and rack-scale platforms
Drive root cause analysis and resolution of complex hardware, firmware, and system-level integration challenges throughout the product lifecycle
Partner with architecture, design, validation, product quality, and GPU (graphics processing unit) partners to translate customer and business requirements into scalable hardware solutions
Collaborate with original design manufacturer and joint design manufacturer partners, as well as global engineering teams, to support platform development, validation, and manufacturing readiness
Communicate technical strategy, design tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to engineering teams, business partners, and leadership stakeholders

Take the first step towards your dream career

Every Dell Technologies team member brings something unique to the table. Here’s what we are looking for with this role:

Essential Requirements

12+ years of hardware engineering experience, or equivalent skill, with a proven track record of delivering complex server and platform solutions
Experience in hardware design and integration of server enclosures, including processing, storage, and input/output subsystems, while balancing mechanical, power, and thermal requirements
Prior background in leading cross-functional engineering teams through architecture, design, validation, and issue resolution
Strong knowledge of server architecture, system integration, and root cause analysis of complex hardware and system-level issues
Proven ability to collaborate and influence across global engineering teams, original design manufacturer and joint design manufacturer partners, and manufacturing organizations

Desirable

Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
Experience developing artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, or large-scale data center platforms, including familiarity with rack-scale infrastructure, systems management technologies, and customer-driven product development

Compensation

Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary range for this position is $176,000- $242,000
