Original job description

Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) ISG builds the products that power infrastructure, solutions, and data management our customers need most. Our teams design and develop the hardware and software that connect infrastructure, accelerate computational workloads, integrate across the stack, protect data continuity, and deliver the platforms, applications, and diagnostics our customers rely on every day at enterprise scale. Some product builders follow the rules. Ours rewrite them. Within ISG, innovation isn't just about creating new technology - it's about challenging assumptions and reimagining how work gets done. Engineers define intent, author precise specifications, and orchestrate AI agents that execute at speed and scale. AI is embedded throughout our development process, helping us move faster, learn quicker, and deliver greater impact. Yet the most important contribution remains uniquely human: deciding what to build, designing how it should work, and applying the judgment needed to earn our customers' trust. When your products power critical infrastructure around the world, that responsibility matters. We move quickly toward the work that matters most. We reward experimentation, encourage bold thinking, and remove unnecessary barriers so great ideas can become reality faster. Our teams embrace a customer-first, first-to-market mindset, transforming rapid feedback into better products and better outcomes. We aren't looking for people who are content with the status quo - we look for builders who question it, improve it, and occasionally rewrite it. If you're energized by solving complex systems challenges, excited to work alongside AI to amplify your impact, and motivated by the opportunity to shape what's next instead of simply maintaining what's been done before, you'll find your place here. Join us and help build the future of enterprise technology as an Engineer I: Materials and Chemistry Engineer - Liquid Cooling on our Mechanical Engineering team in Round Rock, Texas. Why Work with Us Dell Technologies is expanding advanced liquid cooling technologies to enable the next generation of high-performance and sustainable data center solutions. We are seeking an Engineer I - Materials and Chemistry Engineer who thrives in a lab environment and is eager to get hands-on with the science behind our cooling technology. This is an entry-level role designed for someone who wants to spend the majority of their time at the bench - running experiments, operating analytical instruments, preparing samples, collecting data, and generating the results that drive engineering decisions across multiple liquid cooling programs. You won't be sitting behind a desk all day. You'll be in the lab doing the essential, detailed scientific work that keeps our projects moving forward.

What You'll Achieve As an Engineer I: Materials and Chemistry Engineer - Liquid Cooling, you will be embedded across multiple liquid cooling projects, executing the hands-on laboratory testing and analysis that forms the foundation of Dell Technologies' materials strategy. Working alongside senior engineers and cross-functional teams, you will generate the data, perform the experiments, and carry out the characterization work that directly informs product design, material selection, and reliability decisions.

You will:

Perform daily laboratory work including sample preparation, instrument setup, test execution, data collection, and post-test analysis across multiple concurrent projects
Operate and maintain analytical instruments such as FTIR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC, MS, IC, SEM/EDS, XRD, XPS, ICP, and electrochemical testing equipment
Conduct materials characterization on metals, polymers, elastomers, composites, coatings, and coolant fluids to evaluate compatibility, degradation, and performance over time
Support failure analysis and root-cause investigations by performing detailed examination of field-return and test samples, documenting observations, and delivering findings to senior engineers
Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and reliability engineers by providing timely lab results, flagging anomalies, and translating raw data into clear summaries that inform design and specification decisions

Take the first step towards your dream career. Every Dell Technologies team member brings something unique to the table. Here's what we are looking for with this role: Essential Requirements

0–2 years of experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic research) in chemical analysis, materials characterization, or a related laboratory environment
Hands-on experience operating one or more of the following analytical techniques: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis Spectroscopy, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), Ion Chromatography (IC), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), electrochemical analysis, or similar
Foundational understanding of corrosion mechanisms, coolant chemistry, fluid/material compatibility, coatings, and surface-treatment methods
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, repeatable data collection and thorough documentation
Comfort working in a lab environment for the majority of the workday, including handling chemicals, operating equipment, and following safety procedures
Effective communication skills - ability to clearly summarize lab findings in written reports and verbal updates to project teams
Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously, managing priorities and maintaining organized records across concurrent test programs

Desirable Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field
Academic or professional research experience involving long-duration materials exposure, accelerated aging, or environmental testing
Background in or exposure to direct-to-chip liquid cooling, metallurgical principles, or metal-joining methods (e.g., welding, brazing, soldering)
Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or structured data management tools
Experience with standard sample preparation techniques: metallographic mounting, polishing, cross-sectioning, and microscopy
Coursework or project experience related to polymer degradation, electrochemistry, or surface science
A genuine curiosity about how materials behave in real-world systems and a desire to grow into a materials engineering career

Compensation

Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range for this position is $85,502-$110,649. Benefits and Perks of working at Dell Technologies Your life. Your health. Supported by your benefits. You can explore the overall benefits experience that awaits you as a Dell Technologies team member - right now at MyWellatDell.com.
