Original job description

Office of the President & CEO As a leader in advancing New York’s energy transition, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has remained a credible, objective and trusted partner in our state’s energy planning as well as deploying new and innovative technologies to expand New York’s economy. NYSERDA has worked for the past 50 years to protect the environment and help New Yorkers increase energy efficiency, lower energy costs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. NYSERDA engages with stakeholders including residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York’s clean energy economy.
  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large scale in New York.
  • Enable New York’s communities and residents to benefit equitably in the clean energy transition.

Internship Overview NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Siting Team is looking for an intern to help support and improve our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Peer Review Program. The Peer Review Program provides independent, third-party technical reviews of battery energy storage project site plans and designs. These reviews help municipalities and local officials better understand proposed projects and evaluate their compliance with applicable safety codes and standards which allows them to make informed decisions during the permitting process. The intern will work closely with the team to help manage ongoing peer review projects, track progress, coordinate with stakeholders, and keep project information organized. They will also take a closer look at how the program currently operates and identify areas where the process could be improved. As part of the internship, the intern will learn about battery energy storage technology, safety codes, and the permitting process in New York State. They may also have opportunities to attend meetings, trainings, and BESS site visits to better understand how these projects work in practice. This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $18 to $20 per hour based on current class year. This internship will begin on FEB 2027 and continue to Dec 2027. Interns must be located in New York State or an immediately adjacent state while working. It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes. Primary Responsibilities

  • Help coordinate peer review projects and track important deadlines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Support communication and coordination with technical reviewers, and other stakeholders.
  • Review the current peer review process and identify opportunities to make it more efficient.
  • Collect and analyze program data to better understand project timelines, common challenges, and overall program performance.
  • Help improve existing project management and tracking tools.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and site visits when available.
  • Provide internal status updates to program staff biweekly.
  • Work on process review documents for contractors

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in engineering, environmental science, sustainability, energy studies, public policy, business administration, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members and external stakeholders.
  • Interest in renewable energy, battery energy storage, or clean energy technologies.
