Newell Brands is a leading consumer products company with a portfolio of iconic brands like Graco®, Coleman®, Oster®, Rubbermaid®, Sharpie® and Yankee Candle® - and 24,000 talented teammates around the world. Our culture is built on values in action: Integrity, Teamwork, Passion for Winning, Ownership, and Leadership. We work together to win, grow, and make a real impact - supported by a high-performing, inclusive, and collaborative environment where you can be your best, every day.

We are looking for a hands-on, early-career Associate Engineer to join our Energy, Reliability & Automation (ERA) team within Global Supply Chain Engineering. This role is primarily field-facing, spending significant time at our North American manufacturing and distribution sites conducting asset assessments, evaluating facility conditions, supporting capital project execution, and performing measurement and verification work.

The ideal candidate has 2-4 years of professional experience, is comfortable working independently in a plant environment, and able to translate what they see in the field into clear findings and actionable recommendations. They adopt new technology quickly and use AI-enabled workflows to raise the quality and speed of their output. This is not a desk role. The right person wants to be on site, doing real work, and building deep facilities engineering expertise across a large and varied manufacturing network.

What You Will Own

Asset Inventory and Condition Assessment

  • Conduct structured on-site assessments across our North American manufacturing and distribution network, physically inspecting and documenting the condition, age, and performance of facility assets including roofing, HVAC, building envelope, fire suppression systems, civil infrastructure, electrical distribution, and utility systems.
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive asset inventory across the portfolio, capturing equipment type, manufacturer, installation date, expected remaining useful life, and condition rating for each site and system.
  • Identify assets approaching end of life, operating outside of standard, or presenting risk to operations, and flag them with supporting evidence for capital planning prioritization.
  • Photograph, document, and organize site findings in a consistent format that can be reviewed remotely by senior engineers and used directly in capital justification packages.
  • Develop site condition scorecards that give leadership a clear, comparable picture of facility health across the network.
  • Track deficiency closure across sites, following up with site teams to confirm corrective actions are completed and conditions are brought to standard.
  • Support fire and life safety inspection programs by accompanying inspectors, documenting findings, and tracking open deficiencies through to closure.

Site Assessments and Measurement & Verification

  • Perform field measurements and baseline data collection for facility systems, establishing the pre-project performance baselines required for capital justification and post-project verification.
  • Support measurement and verification protocols on completed facility projects, collecting post-implementation data and preparing performance reports that confirm results against capital appropriation commitments.
  • Support site vulnerability assessments by gathering field data on building construction type, roof age and condition, drainage, structural elements, and exposure to wind, flood, and seismic risk.

Capital Project Support

  • Support engineering reviews for facilities capital projects including roofing, HVAC, building envelope, civil and site work, fire protection, and general facility improvements.
  • Help gather project data, organize technical inputs, prepare status updates, and track action items through completion.
  • Review technical drawings, specifications, vendor submittals, and project documentation with guidance from senior engineers and pillar leads.
  • Assist with RFP and SOW preparation, bid comparison, and contractor qualification documentation for facilities scopes.

Engineering Standards Support

  • Translate field findings into structured inputs for the ERA engineering standards library, capturing lessons learned, common deficiencies, and site-specific observations that improve future standards and playbooks.
  • Help maintain site condition data, assessment records, and compliance matrices that feed directly into capital planning and standards development.

Reporting and Portfolio Tracking

  • Maintain asset condition trackers, portfolio status summaries, and facilities program dashboards that senior leaders can use without reformatting.
  • Support three-year capital budget planning by compiling site assessment data, asset condition inputs, and project cost estimates for facilities workstreams.

What We Are Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 2 to 4 years of engineering experience in facilities, plant, infrastructure, or capital project work in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated comfort conducting site walk-throughs, plant assessments, or facilities audits independently and producing structured written findings.
  • Basic working knowledge of facilities systems including HVAC, roofing, building envelope, fire suppression, and civil infrastructure.
  • Strong observation skills and the ability to identify what is non-standard, worn, or at risk in a facility environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to document field findings clearly and follow through on action items.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% to manufacturing and distribution sites across North America.

Highly Valued Differentiators

  • Active daily user of AI tools integrated into engineering workflows, not just occasional experimentation.
  • Hands-on experience building or maintaining asset registers, equipment inventories, or facility condition databases.
  • Experience with measurement and verification methodologies, including baseline establishment, post-implementation data collection, and performance reporting.
  • Exposure to fire and life safety systems, NFPA standards, or building inspection programs.
  • Experience with site resilience, vulnerability assessments, or facility risk programs in an industrial context.
  • Familiarity with ASCE 7-22, IBC, NFPA 13, or NFPA 25.
  • Exposure to multi-site capital programs in a large-scale manufacturing environment.
  • Power BI, Power Automate, or Smartsheet exposure.

What Sets the Best Candidate Apart

The ERA team is a lean, high-output engineering group that values field judgment, ownership, and a high standard of work product. The right person for this role:

  • Walks a facility, identifies what does not meet standard, and comes back with a clear, organized, and prioritized set of findings - not a list of questions.
  • Knows the difference between a system that is aging gracefully and one that is a capital risk, and can articulate why.
  • Takes ownership of site programs and follows through without being chased.
  • Uses AI and digital tools to document, organize, and communicate field findings faster and more clearly than peers who do not.
  • Prepares materials that could be handed to a senior leader without reformatting.
  • Is genuinely energized by site work and sees the manufacturing floor as where the real engineering happens.

About the ERA Team

The Energy, Reliability & Automation team sits within Global Supply Chain Engineering and owns our most strategic infrastructure programs: distributed energy and microgrids, compressed air optimization, process water infrastructure, facilities capital projects, engineering standards, and site resilience. The team operates across all North American manufacturing locations and partners directly with site leadership, finance, and senior executives to deliver capital programs that improve efficiency, resilience, and reliability across our manufacturing network.
