This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a VP, Engineering based in the United States.
Lead a high-impact engineering organization dedicated to improving patient outcomes through technology, data science, and personalized care delivery. In this executive role, you will oversee three product engineering teams responsible for patient decisioning, engagement platforms, and care team productivity. You will shape the engineering strategy and roadmap in close partnership with Product, Clinical Operations, and other business leaders, ensuring technology translates into measurable improvements throughout the patient journey. As the organization expands into new markets and partnerships, you will build scalable systems, strengthen delivery practices, and develop the next generation of engineering leaders. You will balance technical innovation, operational priorities, patient experience, and regulatory requirements in a collaborative, remote-first environment. This is an opportunity to influence the future of data-driven healthcare while building teams and platforms that help patients navigate their care more effectively.
Accountabilities:
As VP, Engineering, you will be accountable for the performance, delivery, technical direction, and leadership development of your organization, ensuring engineering decisions support meaningful business and patient outcomes.
• Lead engineering organizations: Oversee three product engineering teams spanning data science, machine learning, and software engineering through their directors and managers. Establish clear accountability for team performance, delivery, talent development, and business results.
• Drive measurable business outcomes: Own the technology, data, and decisioning systems that support patient engagement, care activities, and care completion. Measure success through tangible outcomes rather than engineering output alone.
• Define engineering strategy and roadmaps: Partner with Product leadership and engineering and data science leaders to translate business priorities into a practical technical roadmap. Collaborate with clinical and value-based care leaders to establish operational goals.
• Strengthen cross-functional partnerships: Share accountability for product direction with Product leadership, maintaining clear decision rights and alignment across Clinical Operations, Patient Engagement, Marketing, Medical Economics, and platform teams.
• Make complex technical tradeoffs: Balance decision quality, channel execution, outreach intensity, patient experience, and delivery constraints. Drive difficult decisions with business partners and escalate to the CTO when choices affect the company's broader strategic direction.
• Develop leadership talent: Recruit, coach, and hold directors and managers accountable. Support first-time engineering managers in becoming effective leaders, strengthen succession planning, and make informed decisions about organizational structure.
• Maintain realistic delivery commitments: Establish a disciplined planning process that ensures Product and Engineering agree on feasibility before commitments are made to clients or executives. Communicate roadmap progress, delivery risks, and changes in expectations clearly.
• Set technical standards: Define architecture for patient-facing and care team systems within the technical direction established by the CTO. Make build-versus-buy decisions within your scope and establish engineering practices that enable teams to deliver quickly and safely.
• Ensure security and regulatory compliance: Maintain the compliance posture of systems handling protected health information under HIPAA and operating in a HITRUST environment. Partner with Security and Compliance teams to manage risk and maintain appropriate safeguards.
• Improve the patient journey: Ensure the decisioning platform and related teams operate as a connected system, from identifying the appropriate next step for each patient to delivering care interventions and supporting completion.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering executive with a strong record of leading multi-team organizations, developing leaders, and translating technical decisions into measurable business results.
• Engineering leadership experience: At least 12 years of experience in software engineering, including seven or more years leading multi-team organizations through directors or managers.
• Business outcome ownership: Demonstrated accountability for meaningful business metrics, with the ability to explain how engineering strategy and technical decisions influenced measurable results.
• Leadership development: A proven track record of recruiting, coaching, and developing engineering leaders, including helping first-time managers grow into effective leadership roles.
• Delivery and execution discipline: Experience setting realistic commitments, identifying feasibility concerns before promises are made, and delivering against demanding external deadlines without compromising quality.
• Strong Product partnership: Experience building trusted relationships with product management teams, with clear decision-making responsibilities, shared accountability, and collaborative roadmap ownership.
• Startup or scale-up experience: Experience leading engineering in a growing organization where processes, structures, and operating practices needed to be established and adapted as the business evolved.
• Technical and educational foundation: A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent demonstrated experience. An advanced degree in a quantitative discipline is a plus.
• Cross-functional leadership: Ability to align engineering, Product, clinical, and operational stakeholders around priorities, resolve competing objectives, and communicate complex tradeoffs effectively.
• Technical judgment: Experience making architectural decisions, evaluating build-versus-buy options, establishing engineering standards, and balancing innovation, scalability, reliability, and delivery speed.
• Travel flexibility: Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% as needed for onsite meetings, team collaboration, and company events.
• Preferred healthcare experience: Familiarity with healthcare, payer organizations, value-based care, and HIPAA-regulated systems.
• Preferred engagement platform experience: Experience with contact center technologies, telephony, or omnichannel patient engagement platforms.
• Preferred decisioning experience: A track record of deploying decisioning or personalization systems in which predictive model outputs directly influence real-world actions and outcomes.
Benefits:
• Remote-first work environment: Work remotely within the United States, with a hybrid work option available in Nashville.
• Paid time off: Generous PTO and holiday plans to support rest, flexibility, and work-life balance.
• Paid parental leave: Support for growing families and caregivers.
• Healthcare coverage: Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance beginning on Day 1.
• Health and wellness support: Wellness resources and an employer HSA contribution.
• Retirement savings: A 401(k) plan with employer matching.
• Meaningful mission: The opportunity to improve patient experiences and outcomes through evidence-based, technology-enabled specialty care.
• Leadership and organizational impact: The opportunity to shape engineering strategy, scale multidisciplinary teams, and influence business outcomes in a growing healthcare organization.
• Inclusive culture: A collaborative environment that values diverse perspectives, honest feedback, and the ability to bring your authentic self to work.
