Original job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Forward Deployed Software Engineer based in the United States.

As a Staff Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and deployment of innovative software solutions that address complex customer and partner requirements. You will take ownership of medium- to large-scale engineering projects, combining hands-on development with technical leadership and customer collaboration. Working closely with internal engineering, product, and delivery teams, you will translate business needs into scalable, secure, and reliable technical solutions. You will also serve as a trusted technical advisor, guiding stakeholders through implementation decisions and ensuring successful project delivery. Your work will focus on backend systems, full-stack applications, and integrations that support modern digital identity and credentialing technologies. This is an opportunity to contribute to privacy-focused technology initiatives while working in a fully remote, collaborative environment at the intersection of software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital innovation.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead medium- to large-scale software engineering projects from initial requirements gathering and technical planning through implementation, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Work directly with customers and external partners to understand their technical requirements, identify business needs, align priorities, and manage expectations throughout project delivery.
  • Own technical architecture, design, and implementation decisions, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with customer objectives.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend systems, full-stack web applications, APIs, and integrations supporting digital identity and credentialing solutions.
  • Translate complex customer requirements into clear technical specifications, implementation strategies, and actionable project plans.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and delivery teams to coordinate dependencies, resolve technical blockers, and ensure high-quality project execution.
  • Act as a primary technical point of contact for customers and partners, providing updates on project progress, technical decisions, potential risks, and recommended solutions.
  • Support integrations with customer infrastructure, third-party services, and legacy systems, ensuring interoperability and reliable performance.
  • Proactively identify technical challenges, project dependencies, and delivery risks while recommending improvements to engineering workflows and implementation processes.
  • Contribute to code reviews, testing, technical documentation, and engineering best practices to maintain high standards of software quality.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to fellow engineers, encouraging knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous development.
  • Communicate customer feedback and implementation insights to internal teams to help improve existing products, services, and technical platforms.
  • Take ownership of technical outcomes while balancing multiple priorities and navigating evolving project requirements.
  • Travel occasionally within the United States as needed to support customer engagements and project delivery.

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including designing, developing, and maintaining production-grade applications.
  • Proven experience independently leading medium- to large-scale engineering projects, coordinating multiple teams, and managing technical initiatives from initial planning through successful delivery.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience working directly with customers or external partners to gather requirements, align expectations, and communicate technical concepts effectively.
  • Proficiency in at least one statically typed programming language, such as Rust, Go, Java, or C#.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, backend development, API design, system integrations, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound technical design decisions, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, product management, and technical delivery.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions and clear implementation plans.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, manage competing priorities, and independently take ownership of project outcomes with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in customer-facing engineering, technical implementation, consulting, or external partner delivery environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Based in the United States and willing to travel occasionally when required to support customer projects.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with digital identity technologies, verifiable credentials, digital wallets, or identity verification solutions.
  • Knowledge of privacy-preserving technologies, authentication protocols, security standards, and interoperability frameworks.
  • Previous experience working with government agencies, public-sector organizations, or highly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with standards-based digital identity architectures and credentialing ecosystems.
  • Experience managing complex integrations involving multiple platforms, systems, vendors, or external partners.
  • Understanding of accessibility requirements, regulatory compliance, and legacy system modernization.
  • Previous experience mentoring software engineers or providing technical leadership across project teams.
  • Background in forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or other customer-facing software engineering positions.

Benefits:

  • Fully remote working arrangement within the United States.
  • Opportunity to lead high-impact engineering projects involving innovative digital identity and credentialing technologies.
  • Significant technical ownership and autonomy over architecture, implementation, and delivery decisions.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with talented engineering, product, and delivery professionals.
  • Direct engagement with customers and partners on complex, meaningful technical challenges.
  • Professional growth through exposure to privacy-preserving technologies, cybersecurity, digital identity, and modern software architecture.
  • Opportunities to provide technical mentorship and influence engineering standards and product development.
  • Inclusive and collaborative working environment that values diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.
  • Equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or veteran status.
  • Occasional business travel to support customer engagements, as required.
