Original job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer, Android & IoT based in the United States.
This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an experienced software engineer to shape the architecture and evolution of products that support large-scale connected device operations. You will lead engineering across an operations portal, device configuration tools, and an AI-powered diagnostics platform, while remaining actively involved in production development. Working closely with product and design leaders, you will guide technical decisions, influence delivery priorities, and ensure solutions are reliable, secure, and scalable. The role combines Android device fleet management, cloud services, IoT connectivity, and emerging AI agent technologies. You will help advance operations from reactive troubleshooting toward proactive diagnostics and self-healing workflows. You will also mentor engineers, contribute to broader architecture standards, and help deliver technology that supports better healthcare experience
Accountabilities:
• Own the technical direction, architecture, engineering standards, and release cadence across the operations portal, device configuration application, and unified device diagnostics platform.
• Write and review production code using Kotlin, Python, and Node.js, contributing across React interfaces, serverless services, and Android and iOS applications.
• Partner with product and design leaders throughout discovery and planning, evaluating feasibility, technical constraints, team capacity, and delivery risks.
• Architect and develop APIs and services for real-time device communication, remote command and control, and fleet management using AWS IoT Core, MQTT, serverless AWS services, and Terraform.
• Lead the development of AI-powered diagnostics and assistant capabilities using AWS Bedrock, tool integrations, human oversight, and evaluation frameworks.
• Establish safe deployment practices for high-impact fleet changes, including staged rollouts, tested rollback procedures, device provisioning, and AI-driven device actions.
• Maintain strong security practices around authentication, authorization, secrets management, and the protection of sensitive health information.
• Coordinate with other engineering teams sharing the Android codebase to ensure changes are compatible and safely deployed.
• Improve product observability through usage metrics, error tracking, performance monitoring, and evidence-based engineering decisions.
• Contribute to architectural reviews, technical proposals, research initiatives, and proofs of concept involving AI diagnostics, self-healing workflows, and next-generation provisioning.
• Support technical planning, design discussions, and code reviews while mentoring engineers and strengthening the team's overall technical capabilities.
Requirements:
• 10+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Strong backend development skills in Kotlin and/or Python, including experience designing reliable services and APIs.
• Hands-on experience with Android device fleets, including Android application or system development, AOSP, APK deployment, ADB, device telemetry, remote control, and provisioning.
• Deep AWS expertise, particularly AWS IoT Core, MQTT, Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
• Experience developing AI agent systems, including LLM tool use through MCP or equivalent technologies, agent guardrails, and evaluation processes.
• Previous experience as a technical or engineering lead, setting architectural direction, establishing standards, collaborating closely with product and design teams, and enabling others without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude, or Copilot in everyday engineering workflows.
• Strong ownership and problem-solving skills, with the ability to take ambiguous challenges through to production and remain accountable for outcomes.
• Sound architectural judgment, knowing when to favor simplicity and when additional structure is necessary.
• Collaborative leadership and mentoring skills, with a focus on building team capability and understanding the needs of field operations.
Additional qualifications that are beneficial:
• Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) configuration and mobile provisioning workflows, as well as familiarity with iOS and Swift, particularly CoreBluetooth.
• Knowledge of React and Node.js for front-end and serverless development.
• Experience with digital signage or kiosk-mode Android device fleets.
• Familiarity with event-streaming technologies such as Kafka.
• Experience with observability tools such as CloudWatch, X-Ray, and OpenTelemetry, and product analytics platforms such as Mixpanel.
• Background in healthcare or other regulated environments, including familiarity with HIPAA requirements and protected health information (PHI).
Benefits:
• Base salary: $144,390–$220,834, depending on skills, qualifications, geographic location, and professional experience.
• Flexible time off to support rest and work-life balance.
• Remote work within the United States.
• Healthcare and wellness support, including mental and emotional wellness resources.
• 401(k) retirement plan.
• Competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package for eligible full-time employees.
• Opportunity to contribute to technology with a meaningful impact on healthcare experiences and patient outcomes.
• Supportive, purpose-driven team environment with opportunities for professional growth.
