Original job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer – Fullstack (Ruby on Rails) based in the United States.

Join a mission-driven digital services team building secure, modern applications that improve how government agencies serve the public. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, combining strong Ruby on Rails expertise with React-based front-end development. You will work in small, cross-functional teams to transform complex business needs into accessible, reliable, and scalable digital solutions. Your work will support meaningful public-sector missions, including public health, financial regulation, immigration services, and identity and access management. Collaborating closely with product managers, designers, researchers, and fellow engineers, you will help deliver high-quality applications using modern cloud infrastructure and continuous delivery practices. This opportunity offers technical ownership, a calm and collaborative working environment, and the chance to make a tangible difference through technology.

Accountabilities:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, test, and maintain full-stack applications while ensuring technical quality, security, and accessibility. Your responsibilities will include:

• Translate business objectives and user needs into effective technical solutions using Ruby on Rails and modern web technologies.

• Design, develop, and maintain responsive, accessible, user-facing features using React and other front-end technologies.

• Build and integrate RESTful APIs that support front-end functionality and reliable application performance.

• Contribute throughout the product lifecycle, including backlog refinement, development, testing, documentation, deployment, and delivery.

• Develop secure, scalable, and maintainable cloud-based applications for federal government clients.

• Work within cloud-based Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) environments, including deployment workflows using tools such as AWS CLI.

• Apply test-driven development (TDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD) practices to improve code quality and reliability.

• Write and maintain automated tests using frameworks such as RSpec, Mocha, Jasmine, or equivalent tools.

• Participate in pair programming, code reviews, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies to support continuous improvement.

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, user researchers, architects, and engineers to deliver solutions aligned with business goals and user needs.

• Apply sound engineering practices across infrastructure, monitoring, and observability to support application stability and performance.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced full-stack engineer who combines strong Ruby on Rails expertise with modern front-end development skills and a commitment to delivering reliable, user-focused software. Required qualifications include:

• At least 8 years of professional software development experience.

• At least 4 years of professional Ruby on Rails development experience.

• Strong front-end development experience using React.

• Proven experience working effectively within Agile development teams.

• Experience deploying applications through CI/CD pipelines and working with cloud environments such as AWS.

• Experience with relational databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar technologies.

• Solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) principles and their practical application.

• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.

• Working knowledge of test-driven or behavior-driven development methodologies.

• A fundamental understanding of infrastructure, monitoring, and observability practices.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

• A proactive, adaptable mindset and the ability to navigate ambiguity, evolving requirements, and changing priorities.

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

• U.S. citizenship, as required for this federal government contractor position.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Experience delivering digital services for government or public-sector organizations.

• Familiarity with identity verification and authentication systems.

• Experience implementing accessibility-focused development practices.

• Experience collaborating closely with UX teams and incorporating research findings into product development.

• Knowledge of modern front-end architecture and performance optimization techniques.

Benefits:

• Competitive compensation: Salary determined at the time of offer based on experience, qualifications, and the level of the position. Multiple experience levels are considered under this evergreen requisition.

• Annual bonus opportunity: Additional earning potential through an annual bonus.

• Healthcare coverage: Medical, dental, and vision benefits.

• Paid time off: PTO to support personal time and work-life balance.

• Company-paid life insurance: Life insurance coverage provided by the employer.

• Retirement savings: A generous 401(k) matching program.

• Purpose-driven work: Opportunities to develop digital products that support public-sector missions and improve government services.

• Calm, sustainable work culture: An environment that prioritizes thoughtful execution, quality, and employee well-being over unnecessary urgency and excessive working hours.

• Collaborative teams: Work closely with multidisciplinary professionals who value knowledge sharing, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Inclusive workplace: A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunities.

• Evergreen hiring process: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for current and anticipated needs. Applying does not guarantee an immediate opening or interview; qualified candidates may be contacted when a suitable opportunity becomes available.

How Jobgether works:

Our system identifies the top-fitting candidates, and this shortlist is then shared directly with the hiring company. The final decision and next steps (interviews, assessments) are managed by their internal team.

We appreciate your interest and wish you the best!
