Original job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager Database Administrator based in the United States.

As a Manager Database Administrator, you will lead a specialized team responsible for managing and optimizing critical database infrastructure in a cloud-based environment. You will oversee the availability, performance, scalability, and security of AWS database systems while ensuring technology solutions align with evolving business needs. Combining strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise, you will drive database modernization initiatives and establish best practices across the organization. You will collaborate closely with engineering, DevOps, SRE, application development, and business teams to deliver reliable and efficient database solutions. This role offers the opportunity to shape infrastructure strategy, strengthen data protection, and support complex technology projects. You will also play a key role in mentoring technical talent and fostering a culture of operational excellence within a fully remote working environment.

Accountabilities:

Lead and manage the Database Administration team, providing strategic direction, technical guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
Oversee the architecture, design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of AWS RDS and EC2 database environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, security, and performance.
Establish, implement, and enforce database policies, procedures, standards, and best practices to maintain system integrity, reliability, and security.
Collaborate with project managers, business stakeholders, application developers, and cross-functional technology teams to ensure database architectures meet operational and business requirements.
Support application development, testing, deployment, and day-to-day operations by providing database expertise and resolving technical challenges.
Take an active leadership role in troubleshooting complex database issues, identifying root causes, implementing solutions, and communicating progress and resolutions to stakeholders.
Lead database modernization initiatives, ensuring infrastructure and processes remain aligned with industry standards and emerging technologies.
Partner with DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams to develop and deploy database templates, promote automation, and reinforce database management best practices.
Monitor database performance, identify optimization opportunities, and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
Manage database growth, capacity planning, and infrastructure resources to anticipate future business and operational needs.
Develop and strengthen database encryption protocols to support Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) architectures and enhance data protection.
Plan, coordinate, test, and execute database upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure improvements with minimal operational disruption.
Design, document, and implement comprehensive database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
Manage vendor relationships, assess emerging database technologies, and recommend tools and solutions that support long-term infrastructure objectives.
Provide support for both planned initiatives and unexpected operational events, ensuring continuity and responsiveness across database services.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is preferred.
At least 12 years of professional experience in database administration, typically including 2 or more years in a VP-level position or an equivalent senior leadership role.
Minimum of 5 years of experience leading and managing technical teams, with demonstrated success in mentoring, training, and developing staff.
3–5 years of hands-on experience managing Amazon RDS and EC2 database environments.
3–5 years of experience working with cloud infrastructure and services, particularly Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Strong expertise in database architecture, design, administration, performance tuning, and optimization.
Extensive experience with SQL, database management tools, and SQL Server and MySQL Server administration.
Direct experience configuring and supporting SQL Server and MySQL Server in multi-node cluster environments.
Advanced knowledge of T-SQL, database security, data integrity, encryption, backup, and recovery processes.
Proven experience collaborating with application developers to design, build, and optimize database environments from initial concept through implementation.
Strong understanding of cloud database architecture, infrastructure management, and operational best practices.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and business teams.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, sound judgment, and a strategic mindset capable of addressing complex technical challenges.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
A collaborative, team-oriented approach, with a strong commitment to accountability, continuous improvement, and staff development.
Ability to respond effectively to both scheduled activities and unexpected technical or operational requirements.
Relevant professional certifications, such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty, are considered an advantage.

Benefits:

Competitive salary: Annual base salary ranging from $150,000 to $175,000, depending on experience, qualifications, skills, geographic location, and market conditions.
Performance incentives: Potential eligibility for a discretionary bonus, subject to applicable program guidelines, position eligibility, and management approval.
Paid time off: Access to paid vacation time in accordance with company policies.
Paid holidays: Additional paid holidays throughout the year.
Healthcare coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
Financial protection: Life and disability insurance coverage.
Retirement savings: Access to a 401(k) retirement savings plan.
Remote flexibility: Fully remote working arrangement within the United States.
Professional development: Opportunities to lead strategic technology initiatives, mentor technical professionals, and contribute to ongoing infrastructure modernization.
Collaborative environment: Work alongside experienced technology and business professionals on complex projects within the real estate finance technology sector.
