Original job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Behavioral Safety Manager based in the United States.
The Behavioral Safety Manager will lead the planning and execution framework that supports the safe, reliable, and scalable deployment of autonomous vehicle technologies. This role sits at the intersection of safety engineering, systems development, validation, and program management, ensuring that safety objectives remain central throughout the product lifecycle. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams to translate safety requirements into actionable plans, maintain traceability, and drive evidence-based verification and validation activities. By managing technical risks, dependencies, and program milestones, you will help ensure autonomous capabilities are ready for real-world deployment. The position offers the opportunity to influence complex, safety-critical technologies while working closely with engineering and operational teams. The role is open to U.S.-based remote candidates, with Ann Arbor, Michigan, also listed as a location.
Accountabilities:
• Lead the planning and execution of safety-critical initiatives across the autonomous vehicle lifecycle, ensuring alignment between product roadmaps, safety objectives, and deployment milestones.
• Establish and maintain end-to-end traceability between hazards, safety requirements, system requirements, verification activities, validation evidence, and release decisions.
• Coordinate cross-functional safety activities, including hazard analyses, safety assessments, safety case development, and operational readiness reviews.
• Drive integrated verification and validation planning across simulation, test environments, closed-course testing, and field operations to support evidence-based deployment decisions.
• Manage program risks, technical dependencies, and change impacts across systems, software, hardware, perception, localization, controls, and operational teams.
• Monitor safety and program performance metrics, proactively identifying issues that could affect system performance, safety objectives, regulatory compliance, or delivery commitments.
• Facilitate executive reviews and technical governance forums, providing clear visibility into program progress, residual risks, and overall safety readiness.
• Ensure engineering execution remains aligned with safety assurance objectives while maintaining program schedules and delivery commitments.
Requirements:
• Demonstrated experience leading programs involving autonomous systems, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), robotics, aerospace, industrial automation, or other safety-critical platforms.
• Practical experience applying ISO 21448 (SOTIF) across the safety lifecycle, including hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), safety goals, functional and technical safety concepts, and ASIL decomposition.
• Working knowledge of ISO 26262; familiarity with additional standards such as IEC 61508, UL 4600, or ISO/PAS 8800 is an advantage.
• Familiarity with key safety lifecycle artifacts, including Item Definitions, HARA, HIRE, FMEA/FMEDA, Safety Requirements, Safety Plans, Safety Cases, and Verification and Validation strategies.
• Ability to connect engineering execution with safety assurance requirements, balancing technical rigor with program delivery priorities.
• Strong cross-functional coordination and communication skills, with the ability to align engineering, safety, and operational stakeholders around shared objectives.
•
Relevant technical education and experience through one of the following pathways:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, with competencies typically acquired through at least 6 years of relevant experience.
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, with competencies typically acquired through at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, with competencies typically acquired through at least 1 year of relevant experience.
Benefits:
• Annual U.S. salary range of $153,200–$183,800.
• Remote work opportunity for candidates based in the United States.
• Ann Arbor, Michigan, is also listed as a potential work location.
