Original job description

About Invoca Invoca is an AI-powered revenue execution platform that brings together marketing, commerce, and contact center teams to turn every customer interaction into measurable, profitable growth. Join our dynamic, fast-growing team, where innovation and collaboration are at the core of our culture.

About the role This role is on our Integrations team, where we connect Invoca's AI agents to the systems our customers already run - CRMs, ad platforms, contact centers, healthcare systems, and the web - so an agent can find a lead, book an appointment, or act in the customer's own system. We own that surface end to end: vendor connectors and MCP servers, webhooks, Google Ads, the web widget, and the production monitoring behind them. We are making those integrations self-serve and reliable enough to trust. That includes Google Local Services Ads, customer MCP connectors with evaluations, event ingestion, web actions for voice and SMS, and voice agents in the customer's contact center. You will work in Ruby on Rails and TypeScript, share on-call for real customer traffic, and use AI agents to write and review the code. You decide what a human has to check before it reaches a customer. This role is not defined by a single language or framework. It is defined by outcomes: the speed, quality, and trust with which this team ships. You own meaningful pieces of the team's roadmap, you make the engineering system around you faster and safer over time, and you treat AI as part of how the work gets done rather than a tool you occasionally reach for.

What you'll do Own projects end to end

  • Own a project, or a major piece of one, from scoping through shipping, and confirm afterward that it achieved the outcome it was meant to produce.
  • Recognize where your work touches other systems and teams, and resolve those dependencies and conflicts rather than handing them off.
  • Define what good looks like for the work you own and hold that bar, rather than waiting for it to be defined for you.

Design pragmatically

  • Own technical design for a feature or service. Decide as clearly what to leave out as what to build, and back your choices with a working prototype.
  • Weigh testability, scalability, and maintainability without being prompted, and favor the simplest approach that will hold up.

Build AI-native

  • Use AI agents as a routine part of writing production code: run several in parallel, get productive quickly in unfamiliar parts of the codebase, and review AI output efficiently by focusing on the risky parts.
  • Build your own skills, agents, or tooling when it would make the team faster, and improve the parts of our shared development system your work depends on.
  • Know where it is safe to let AI run and where a human must review before anything reaches production, and set that bar for the work you own.

Ship AI-powered product

  • Build customer-facing features on top of AI systems: handle non-deterministic outputs, design and run evaluations, manage latency, and debug unexpected model behavior.
  • Establish safe, observable, and auditable ways to bring AI into the product, with monitoring and tracing in place so the team can see how agents behave with real users.

Stay close to the customer

  • Understand the customer's real problem before building starts, and confirm afterward that it was solved.
  • Take part directly in customer feedback sessions, and use product and adoption metrics to guide what you build next.
  • Partner with your Product Manager to prioritize based on measurable customer and business impact, not technical elegance alone.

Own production

  • Troubleshoot independently across the team's services, contribute to post-incident reviews, and recommend process and monitoring fixes alongside code fixes.
  • Spend review time where the risk is highest, and identify gaps in review and verification tooling.

Raise the team

  • Lead team discussions, ask for differing opinions before a decision, and support the team's direction once it is set.
  • Communicate clearly with cross-functional partners, and help teammates get better at working with AI through pairing, demos, and documentation.

What we're looking for We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer II who builds leverage for the team, not just executes within it. You likely have:

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of measurable impact in production environments.
  • At least one full year of actively using AI tools and agents to write production code, as a core part of your daily workflow rather than an occasional assist.
  • Experience shipping customer-facing, AI-powered product features with real users: working with non-deterministic outputs, evaluations, latency, and debugging unexpected model behavior. Building models yourself is not required.
  • Experience building your own skills, agents, or developer tooling that made a team faster.
  • Sound judgment about when to let AI run and when a human must review before anything reaches production.
  • A product-engineer mindset: you can take an open-ended problem, find the right signal from customer data and product partners, and ship a solution that solves the customer's real issue.
  • Comfort across the stack, with depth wherever the team leans.
  • An eagerness to automate. You look for chances to offload work to AI rather than needing to be convinced.
  • Strong technical judgment with a bias toward simplicity and adoption over theoretical completeness.
  • The ability to connect technical work to customer and business outcomes, and to communicate that connection clearly.

Technical background

  • Heavily weighted: RAG, evaluations, agentic products, chatbots and conversational bots; evaluating and improving AI agents with monitoring, tracing, and simulation data.
  • Strong plus: building MCP tools, agentic pipelines, background jobs and async processing (Kafka or similar), third-party integrations.
  • Advantage: Ruby on Rails (our stack), TypeScript/JavaScript (where we are moving), MySQL.
  • Neutral: any other primary language. AI makes picking up a new one easy, so language is not a filter.

Team-specific skills

  • You have shipped a third-party integration and operated it afterward: OAuth, webhooks, vendor APIs, retries, idempotency, and a way to know it failed before the customer reported it.
  • You have built or run an MCP server or another tool-calling integration that an agent used with real customers, including keeping one customer's credentials and data separate from another's, and a way to check that the tool call was the right one.

How you work

  • Direct and kind. You say the hard thing in the room, not afterward, and you receive feedback the same way.
  • High agency. You act without waiting for permission on reversible decisions and own the outcome either way. No work is beneath you.
  • You raise the bar. You think from first principles rather than accepting how things have been done, and you don't reward work that's merely fine.
  • You make it safe to not know. A high bar and a safe team are not in tension - people have to be able to ask, dissent, and be wrong without paying for it, or you never hear the thing you needed to hear. Nobody is made small for the gap between where they are and where the bar is.
  • You bring intensity. Deadlines in days where the work allows, a rough first version to get real feedback, risk flagged early, and you finish what you start.
  • You dig for the real problem. When someone asks for something, you understand what they're trying to accomplish before responding.

How success will be measured

Within 12 months, success in this role will look like:

  • You have owned at least one project from scoping to shipping, and there is clear evidence it produced the customer or business outcome it was meant to.
  • AI-powered features you built are live with real users, with evaluations, monitoring, and tracing in place that the team relies on.
  • Your use of AI agents in daily development is routine and visible, and at least one skill, agent, or piece of tooling you built is used by teammates.
  • You troubleshoot independently across the team's services, and your post-incident contributions have led to process or monitoring changes, not just code fixes.
  • Your Product Manager and engineering leadership treat you as a trusted voice on what the team should build and how.
  • You have shipped a customer-facing integration or MCP connector that a customer or an Invoca agent relies on in production, with monitoring and an evaluation the team uses, and you have taken one production failure in that area from the alert through the fix and the change that keeps it from recurring.
