Required Skills & Experience

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Production software development experience in at least one systems or backend language - Python, Go, Rust, C++, Java, or comparable - with code that ran in a production environment, not only in development or test
  • Prior experience in discrete or component manufacturing and/or assembly - understanding how parts are made, how operations are sequenced, and how manufacturing execution systems, PLCs, HMIs, and sensors function on a real shop floor
  • 5 or more years in a highly regulated manufacturing environment - aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, pharmaceutical, or medical device - where OT systems are subject to security audit, change control, and compliance requirements
  • Hands-on integration experience with machine controller protocols and industrial communication standards - OPC-UA, MTConnect, MQTT, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, FANUC FOCAS, Siemens S7, or comparable - at the level of having written software that uses them against real hardware, not just configured a vendor platform
  • Working knowledge of the ISA-95 / Purdue Reference Model and how it shapes IT/OT network segmentation, system hierarchy, and the data flows between enterprise (Level 4), site operations (Level 3), and control (Levels 0–2)
  • Direct experience integrating with PLM, MES, or PLM systems as consumers of OT data - and with PLCs, HMIs, and sensor networks as OT-side data sources
  • Experience designing or implementing data pipelines that ingest, normalize, and route high-frequency time-series data from industrial sources
  • Demonstrated ability to define requirements for a system you will subsequently implement - written requirements that shaped a delivered software product
  • Experience working with an architecture function to develop solution architecture - data flow, network topology, integration patterns, and security boundary design
  • Security boundary experience in IT/OT or network-segmented environments - network zone enforcement, credential management, encrypted transport, or audit logging
  • Software engineering fundamentals: version-controlled code, automated testing, CI/CD pipeline experience, and code structured for maintainability by other engineers
  • On site, Costa Mesa, California; remote exceptions at management discretion for exceptional candidates
  • Clearance Eligible

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Integration experience with Forge, Teamcenter, or comparable MES or PLM systems as consumers of OT data - understanding what those systems need from the OT layer and in what format
  • Familiarity with IEC 62443 or NIST SP 800-82 and how zone/conduit models and security levels translate to software architecture decisions
  • Experience with edge computing or edge-to-cloud architectures for industrial data - buffering at the edge, intermittent connectivity handling, and local processing before cloud transmission
  • Experience with device management for industrial or embedded systems - certificate provisioning, firmware lifecycle, remote configuration
  • Background in real-time or near-real-time systems where data latency, ordering, and delivery guarantees affect downstream manufacturing or quality decisions
  • Experience building operator-facing management interfaces for OT asset estates - connectivity dashboards, alert management, device health visualization

Job Description

ABOUT THE TEAM

Maritime Digital Production is the software and digital systems function within Anduril's Heavy Metal division. We build and deploy the technology stack that powers Anduril's shipbuilding factories: the data infrastructure that makes every machine and sensor visible in real time, the manufacturing execution system that workers and planners use every shift, the scheduling engine that replans production in minutes instead of days, and the AI systems that remove manual toil from the shop floor and business operations. We operate at the boundary between Operational Technology and Information Technology, incubating solutions close to the production line, validating them with real operators, hardening them for reliability and security, and scaling them across sites. The environment is fast, physical, and consequential. When our systems go down, production stops. The output of our work is not a dashboard: it is a ship.

ABOUT THE JOB

The OT layer on Anduril's factory floor - machine tools, CNC controllers, sensors, metrology equipment, PLCs, and industrial systems - currently speaks its own language. The IT systems that need to consume what it produces (Forge, Teamcenter, data infrastructure, analytics) speak another. The software that translates, normalizes, routes, and secures data across that boundary is where programs are delivered to machines, machine state comes back to the MES, sensor data reaches the analytics stack, and device health is monitored and governed. That software layer does not yet exist as a managed, governed system. This role builds it. You will define the requirements for the IT/OT integration layer, work with the enterprise architecture team to design the solution, then develop and test it. The scope covers device onboarding and lifecycle management, industrial protocol integration, data normalization and routing, security boundary enforcement between IT and OT networks, and the APIs and interfaces that expose OT data to Forge, Teamcenter, and downstream consumers without requiring those systems to speak OT protocols directly. You will work with manufacturing engineers, OT systems, PLM and MES teams, and the enterprise architecture function to understand both sides of the boundary - and build software that makes crossing it reliable, secure, and auditable. This is a software developer role with requirements and architecture responsibility. You will write the requirements for the system you will implement. You will help design an architecture you will build. The standard for done is software running on the factory floor against real machines, not a prototype that works in a lab.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Define requirements for the IT/OT integration layer: device onboarding, protocol translation, data normalization and routing, security boundary management, and device lifecycle
  • Work with the enterprise architecture team to design the solution - data flows, network segmentation model, device lifecycle architecture, and integration patterns with Forge, Teamcenter, and data infrastructure
  • Develop device connectors and protocol adapters that ingest data from machine tools, controllers, sensors, and industrial systems using applicable industrial communication protocols
  • Build data normalization and routing pipelines that transform raw OT data into structured, timestamped, machine-attributed records consumable by IT systems without manual intervention
  • Develop device lifecycle management capabilities: onboarding, configuration management, credential and certificate lifecycle, firmware version tracking, and decommissioning
  • Build and expose APIs and interfaces that deliver OT data to Forge, Teamcenter, Oracle ERP, and analytics consumers - abstracting OT protocol complexity from IT system integrators
  • Implement security controls at the IT/OT boundary: network zone enforcement, credential management, encrypted transport, and audit logging aligned to applicable OT security standards
  • Develop monitoring and observability capabilities for the managed OT estate: device connectivity status, data freshness, error rates, and alert routing
  • Write and execute test plans covering device integration, data fidelity, boundary security enforcement, and failure and recovery behavior - including tests against real production hardware
  • Document the integration architecture, APIs, and device connector specifications to a level that allows downstream teams to build against them without reverse engineering the system

WHAT THIS ROLE DOES NOT OWN

  • Enterprise architecture authority - supports and contributes to that function; does not own architectural decisions unilaterally
  • Physical OT infrastructure procurement, installation, or maintenance
  • IT infrastructure provisioning - network, servers, or cloud environments
  • Manufacturing process definition, machine programming, or CAM
  • Engineering management - no direct reports
