Required Skills & Experience

  • Senior-level embedded software/firmware development experience using C/C++.
  • Proven board bring-up experience from scratch, including taking a new/custom PCB from initial hardware through a functioning embedded system.
  • Experience developing, porting, or adapting Board Support Packages (BSPs), low-level firmware, and device/peripheral drivers.
  • Strong ability to read electrical schematics and component/ASIC datasheets and translate hardware designs, pinouts, registers, and interfaces into working embedded software.
  • Hands-on RTOS experience such as µC/OS (MicroC/OS), VxWorks, Green Hills INTEGRITY, FreeRTOS, ThreadX, MQX, QNX, or similar real-time operating systems.
  • Strong hands-on hardware/software integration and troubleshooting experience using tools such as JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Experience with embedded hardware communication interfaces. CAN/CAN bus is highly preferred among the core requirements, with SPI, I2C, and UART also highly relevant.
  • Microcontroller/embedded processor development experience, ideally STM32 or ARM Cortex-M, with comparable MCU platforms considered.
  • Senior technical leadership experience: ability to independently own complex technical problems/projects, make architecture/design decisions, and provide technical direction while remaining hands-on.
  • Ability and willingness to work primarily onsite in Moorpark, CA to support prototype hardware and lab-based development.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

  • STM32 development experience if primary MCU experience is on another comparable platform.
  • Aerospace, avionics, UAV/UAS, flight software, robotics, autonomous systems, missile systems, or other real-time control system experience.
  • Safety-critical or mission-critical embedded software experience, including transferable backgrounds such as embedded medical devices, automotive controls, or industrial control systems.
  • Embedded Linux and Linux device-driver development.
  • Additional communication/interface experience including RS-232, RS-485, USB, Ethernet, and MIL-STD-1553.
  • Experience with guidance, navigation, flight controls, autopilots, sensors, payloads, or related aircraft systems.
  • MATLAB/Simulink experience and strong mathematical/analytical skills.
  • Experience developing embedded software from requirements and architecture through integration, system-level testing, production, and field/flight testing.
  • DO-178, avionics software, regulated medical device, or comparable rigorous software-development experience.
  • Personal interest or experience in aviation, UAVs/drones, robotics, autonomous systems, or related technologies.

Job Description

Senior Staff Embedded Software Engineer responsible for hands-on development and technical leadership of real-time, mission-critical embedded software for unmanned aircraft and robotic systems.

This engineer will develop embedded C/C++ software, bring up new hardware platforms from scratch, develop and adapt board support packages (BSPs) and device drivers, and integrate software directly with custom electronics. The engineer must be able to take a newly designed PCB/PCBA, read hardware schematics and component/ASIC datasheets, understand pinouts and interfaces, and bring the system from initial hardware through functioning embedded software.

The role works closely with hardware, systems, test, and software engineering teams throughout the full development lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, hardware/software integration, troubleshooting, system-level testing, and flight testing.

This is a hands-on Senior Staff individual contributor/technical lead role, not a people-management position. The engineer should be capable of independently leading complex technical projects while continuing to code, debug hardware, and solve difficult real-time embedded system problems.

Primarily onsite in Moorpark, CA due to regular access to prototype hardware and lab equipment.
