Backend Engineer

Job Description

Walmart is looking for a hands-on Backend Engineer to help build and modernize scalable backend applications and services.

This role will be heavily focused on Rust, with approximately 70–80% of the development work being done in Rust. The engineer will work across the software development lifecycle, helping design, build, test, deploy, and support backend solutions within an Azure-based environment.

The ideal candidate has strong backend development fundamentals, hands-on experience with Rust, and experience building applications in Azure. Walmart is also looking for someone with an AI-centric mindset. They do not need to be an AI/ML engineer, but they should understand how to appropriately leverage generative AI tools within software development and engineering workflows.

Skills and Requirements

Strong hands-on Rust development experience (70% of the work will be within Rust – if no Rust experience, Java/Golang/C/C++/C#/.NET are applicable – but must be willing to spend time learning Rust during onboarding period) Strong backend/software engineering background Experience building scalable backend applications, services, or systems Hands-on Microsoft Azure experience Experience building and deploying applications in Azure Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle Experience with CI/CD pipelines

Strong DevOps mindset, including:

Monitoring Logging Production support Deployment processes Experience participating in solution/system design Experience with code reviews and engineering best practices Ability to build scalable, secure, and maintainable systems
